Im getting this game soon and i want a hardcore fighter for my first game, they are most often the easiest to play. Is this true in this game also?
If i choose being a fighter i want to know which skills i need and work best. i want the man to be a powerhouse!

Dont forget that im totally new to this game so i'd like some alternatives. Thank You!

Morrowind is more easily beaten with a fighter than with a mage, because the fighter can survive the first levels a bit easier. In the end things tend to level.

You want a great fighter? then choose a custom class and get:
1)Heavy armor - a must
2)Long blade
3)block (if you like one handed weapons adn shields). otherwise athletics, will improve your fatigue.
4)acrobatics - when encumbered by a heavy armor, you need a bit of jumping skills, otherwise you won't get nowhere higher than a small step
5)security - you need to open locks after all
6)mysticism - teleport spells, invaluable.
7)armorer - you want to repair those items on your own
8)restoration? to heal yourself, or another weapon proficiency (blunt weapon / axe) to keep up the leveling after long blade has no more secrets

As race, you should choose Nord, Orc or Redguard and in addition to the above, marksman and sneak are also good skill choices.

As birthsign you should choose the warrior or the lady.

I might give different opinion.

Race = Nord ( because of the racial bonus ), Sign = The atronach ( because of the bonus to magicka x2.5 )

for skills,
Major skill
1. Long blade ( there are some good long blade in game )
2. Block, ( because you might want high AC )
3. Heavy Armor ( they provide high AC )
4. Sneak ( to steal stuff, complete quest )
5. Security ( to open lock doors )

Minor Skill
1. Alchemy ( because of the atronach sign, you'll need this to create mana potion )
2. Speechcraft ( you'll need this to taunt npc )
3. Markman ( excellent when combine with sneak, can shoot from far without faer of retaliation )
4. Restoration ( healing spell, will come in handy )
5. up to you.

Guys, you missed the Hard Core Fighter part:

1)Heavy armor
2)Long blade
3)Block
4)Security
5)Marksman
6)Armorer
7)Medium Armor
8)3rd weapon
9)4th weapon or armor
10)5th weapon or armor

Good luck.

From past experience in Arena and Daggerfall, I think the easiest character to start with is a Fighter-Mage who doesn't rely on Destruction for offence but rather uses magic to boost the character weaknesses.

I just started playing the game myself and that's what I'm doing. So far, no problems.

Oh, as to the race I suggest also thinking about redguard: that adrenaline rush power can turn you into an unstoppable destruction machine. And also their long blade +20 bonus will greatly help you in the early stages of the game, although, to be honest, it "steals" you 4 possible levels

Yeah, you guys all missed the 'Hard Core FIGHTER' part.

When making characters you want to use skill attributes as your guide. A fighter's main attributes are Strength & Endurance. You only get three attribute bonuses per level up so this means that outside of Strength & Endurance (which covers most armor & weapon skills) you only have one spare attribute you can specialize in! I recommend Personality as the third attribute so that you can use the Speechcraft, Merchantile, & Illusion skills. Up to you though. I also recommend the Lady sign so that you will get the initial personality & endurance bonuses which are very important.

Here are some skills I recommend you have and why:

Long blade, hammer, battle axe, pole weapon -
Long blade has the most numerous and strongest weapons in the game. There are also some good hammers, battle axes, and poles, so pick out another one of these to help fill up your skill slots (I recommend hammer btw).

Heavy armor & medium armor -
As a pure fighter you really only need heavy armor, but there is some good medium armor especially in the Tribunal expansion so consider it if you have an empty skill slot.

Acrobatics & Athletics -
Stick these in your minor skill slots.

Speechcraft & Merchantile -
These two will help you get good prices at stores and talk people into helping you out. They are good skills to have if you specialize in the personality attribute but otherwise they will be hard to advance in.

Illusion -
As long as you are using the personality attribute you may as well pick up this magic skill! This is the only magic skill that does not rely on Intellegence or Willpower so you can use it without having to divert your precious attribute points toward the traditional magic attributes.

Here is a sample character -
Major attributes: Long blade, hammer, axe, heavy armor, medium armor
Minor attributes: Acrobatics, Athletics, speechcraft, merchantile, illusion

Now here are some skills I suggest that you DONT get:

Marksmanship -
If you`re going to be a pure fighter then marksmanship is just a waste of time. After awhile you`ll be strong enough to run up to any foe and bash their brains in with one swing of your hammer.

Sneak -
You don`t really need to. A pure fighter has no fear.

Light Armor -
This is for theives. Fighters use heavy armor.

Security & Pickpocketing -
Also for theives. Just use open lock scrolls which are found in abundance all throughout the land. When you get some money you can have an enchanter make you a lock-opening ring or something.

Small Blade -
There are no good small blades.

Block -
This is ok for half fighter/half mages and other types, but for a pure fighter it is next to worthless. All the best weapons are two handed (although there is a decent one handed long sword in tribunal)..

Offensive Magic -
Worthless for the same reason marksmanship is. Just concentrate on melee.

Defensive & Healing Magic -
This one is really up to you. You can do without if but if you`re having trouble filling up all your skill slots at the beginning of the game you might consider putting Restoration magic in somewhere. Like I said really you can do without it though and having magic skills forces you to put attribute points into Intellegence and Willpower. Remember that you can only put points into three attributes every level up - and two of them will always go into Strength & Endurance!

You really don't need this at all. You find teleport amulets and scrolls really early on - I've never cast an intervention spell myself in the whole time I've played. Unnecessary, especially for a minor spot.

Also while I get the hard core fighter bit, I wouldn't put more than 2 slots for a weapon, or even then you probably won't use more than 1 type of weapon after a while. Early on if you have long blade and axe for instance you might find a great axe then later find a great long blade so switch, but later you'll get your super weapon and that will be it. I have 100 in long blade and about 75 in axe, and while I know I should be using an axe to get my skill up and level up quicker I just can't make myself stop using my long blade because it's so good.

I would also disagree about not putting light armour - early on when your strength is quite low you're not going to able to wear a full set of heavy armour, or even mix and match with medium. I found it useful to wear light boots and/or gloves so I could carry enough stuff around. I think to RP a hard core fighter you would prefer to wear slightly lighter armour than waste points on casting feather spells and so on.

So my picks would be...
Major:
1. weapon
2. heavy armour
3. armourer
4. acrobatics (I put it here because it's harder to raise than athletics)
5. block

Minor:
1. medium armour
2. athletics
3. light armour
4. 2nd weapon OR speechcraft
5. mercantile

My hard core fighter uses eltonbrand, which beats any daedric dai katana and is single handed. Firebrand is also good. AND, if you get bloodmoon, there is a blunt weapon which is even better than eltonbrand, is single handed and is impossible not to get...

Plus, daedric shields carry loads of constant effect enchantment... no sense leaving them home.
The "invaluable" meant that you cannot play well without casting those spells somehow, be it from your very hands or from a scroll or amulet.

But I put it as a minor skill because there was nothing better to get. Medium armor is IMO useless: the best armor is heavy. There are some interesting light armor pieces, like boots fo the apostle and cuirass of the saviour hide, but really no medium armor worth the effort to train the skill.
Even bloodmoon gives you good medium armor, but not comparable to deadric, so why bother.
