In terms of portability, I mean, something I can take with me when I go somewhere. :p

I don't expect to go flying around anywhere. But on occasion, should I go to visit relatives, it would be nice if I could bring my computer with me.

I may look into a cooling deck of some sort. I have a small corner desk for use at home, but if I want to use my laptop anywhere other than my room, it would be a good thing to have.

As a possible cheaper alternative to Alienware I'm looking at This one

I've heard some pretty good reviews of Acer products.

One brand I would stay away from is Samsung - because they have the worst speakers in the laptop world. Carrying around plug in speakers is something you won't want to do if being portable is your thing. If you are stuck between a couple of laptops try out the sound before buying. None will be good but some may be less poor than others.

Sound quality is easily fixed with a pair of $50 earbuds. Which I just happened to have gotten 10 years ago for $30. Amazon was running a special. And they come with a pocket sized carrying case, so they're pretty good portability-wise.

I would go Asus ahead of Acer if you are looking at gaming. Asus seems to produce better gaming rigs. Once place to check out is www.notebookreviews.com.

I love my Asus G73SX. It's the 17 inch version, with full HD. All will serve you well but you just need to decide what size screen and if you want it to be HD or not.

In the interest of keeping my computer useful for some of the games I already have (oblivion for one) until I can afford the kind of laptop I'm looking for I'm thinking of getting a cheap vid card. It's a PCI-E slot.

Should I go with ATI, or Nvidia? I'm looking to spend under $50. Just something, inexpensive, but functional and durable.

Some light browsing brought this one up: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...084&CatId=3668

further research has shown that my HP pavilion likely only has a 250 watt power supply, so I'll either have to consider upgrading that as well, or settle for a vid card with lesser power requirements. I have no problems with settling for a card with lesser requirements.

This card has piqued my interest. Though, it says it's a 64-bit card. My OS is only 32-bit Vista home. Is this an issue? And while many cards display power requirements. This one doesn't declare any, does that mean that it'll work with any power supply, or has the information simply been ommited?

I would like to reiterate, that I'm going for a card that's good for light gaming. Nothing more recent than Oblivion.

Well, as stated in other discussions:
I have an HP Pavilion a6010n
Intel Core dual processor, 1.8GHz, 1.8GHz
1 GB RAM (not sure what kind exactly)
and 32-Bit Windows Vista Home edition.

I'm looking at three possible video cards at the moment:
Galaxy 84GFE6DC2EMM GeForce 8400 GS Video Card
EVGA 01G-P3-1302-LR GeForce 8400 GS Video Card
VisionTek VTK X1300PCIeDMS Radeon X1300 DMS Video Card

First two are Nvidia and the last one is ATI. All three, as near as I can tell, are PCIe types (rather than PCIe 2.0 or 2.1). And none of them appear to need a power supply above and beyond what is already in my system (250 watts). I'm currently leaning towards the Geforce cards, but I'm open to suggestions, as always.

On further observation, I may have to disregard the ATI card, unless there is some kind of adapter to go from the outputs available on the card to the VGA on my current monitor (an old Samsung SyncMaster 171v)

Dug a little deeper. Turns out, no matter what, I'm gonna need a new power supply to get a decent vid card. The GeForce cards need 300-350 watts, I only have about 250. So I may go for a 400 watt supply just to be safe.
