I have never understood the purpose of specalised mages. They can not learn as many spells as a regular mage cos of the oposition class thing. It would seems far better to just be a regular mage with 18 Int then you would have access to most spells. The only way to get 19 Int in BGII is to be a Gnome but then you have to become an Illusionist which defeats the point of the 19 Int as it means you cant learn all of the spells. I have neverunderstood specalised mages so some one please explain.

Specialist mages get to memorise one extra spell per level.

So by Level 17 they would have 17 more spell slots than a regular mage ? If so that makes them a little more interesting. Well I have a regular mage with 19 Int (imported from BGI) so I can learn every spells there is. I wonder what is best to have regular or specalised?

Not 17. By lvl. 17 they will have 1 more extra slot for each SPELL LEVEL.

Okey-dokey,

I am usually a Sorcerer, but from what I gather from posts and past conversations, people like to use a specialised mage because instead of the normal 4 spell slots per spell level, they get 5 spell slots per spell level.

Meaning, with 9 spell levels, they get a grand total of 9 additional spell slots.

Most people, it would seem, use the Conjurer, because it's opposition school is Divination, if I recall correctly, and only True Sight is missed, easily covered by other NPCs. Necromancer is another popular kit too, since the lack of Illusion-classed spells is not really that bad.

Actually with Conjurer you also miss out on Identify. It's a pain to use scrolls or glasses of Identification, especially in the beginning. I like Invokers more.

Ay, but Identify won't be used much, except maybe in the Underdark where there are truckloads of Magical Drow Equipment.

Also, Aerie, Imoen, Nalia and Jan can all learn Identify. They also have high lore which means that they can usually identify most items, except the really high-level ones.

I usually end having a scroll-case completely filled with Identify scrolls by the time I reach Underdark, and most of the time, Glasses of Identification was enough. It is not often when you find more than 3 items you cannot identify with natural lore.
