Sadly, I think that the problems with phishing will disappear at the same time you can get people to stop clicking on the attachments in unsolicited emails. The same group of folks who don't have the skepticism to say "hey, did Johnny really send me this?" are the ones who aren't skeptical enough to say "hey, if they lost my account number, how did they have my email address?"

Social engineering (talking to people) remains one of the best ways to infiltrate almost anything... including their bank accounts.

I dunno if this email I recieved recently was a scam or not, I never clicked any links. Was kind of weird. The emailer was labled: Mike C. and I don't know anyone named Mike. Making me a promise that my banking account will get more money etc etc, yea I believe it's a scam. I just don't know about the name part... they knew my name... BTW Yes I probably am very stupid in this subject, cause I don't get much spam.

I'm with LZ... it was spam, and someone trying to separate you from your money.

Always use the reasonableness test: Why would a reasonable person or organization make that offer to you? To give you money... what's in it for them? Unless you can identify a real philanthropist, consider it a scam. And come on in here to ask if you're unsure. I know I'm about as skeptical as they come...

I doubt all offers for free money unless the person is right in front of me handing me the 'cash' (US dollars) in person. And only if it's in 20's or smaller. The only thing I have to worry about then is if the bills are counterfeit. And to counterfeit anything under a 20 is pointless.
