Just found this on CNN. Iraq and Iran will chair the UN conference on Disarmament, because of alpabetical order. Here is the link.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/...nce/index.html

Isn't that like putting the fox in charge of the hen house? I'm sure Mr. Blix will be impressed! Especially after his less than glowing speech to the UN Security Council on Iraq WmD status.

I doubt they're gonna change their statutes just because it sounds "ironic". And refusing Iraq into the conference despite official regulations would only alienate them further, which isn't that smart from a "let's try to prevent a war first" perspective the UN is trying to uphold at the moment. I don't really see the problem.

Iraq, a nation which has agreed to disarm under order of the UN, but has refused to do so for the last dozen years gets to head the UN committee on Disarmament for 4 weeks?

According to Chief UN Weapons Inspector Hans Blix, Iraq has not come to terms with the order to disarm and is not co-operating substanitively.....
