I have witnessed a coming together from people here in Manhattan. People are consoling, hugging, writing messages on cardboard in Union Square, lighting candles, being more courteous and patient, smiling at each other. A group of us had a prayer session at one end of union square. We prayed for those killed those injured, the families of both. We prayed for the mental health of those involved and wisdom for the counselors, strength for the medical staff, perseverance for rescue workers.

A friend here has his cousin - a firefighter - missing. We gathered around him.

We prayed for those affected economically, for those afraid, for those now homeless. For the mental and ophysical health of the children.

Then there was the celebration. The thanks for being alive, for an extra day, an extra minute. Life is a gift. We don't earn the right to birth. Every moment is a bonus. Any of us can go at any time, in a car accident or an horrific event such as this.

I have no fear of death were it to befall me. I know where I am going. I am relishing every instant of this life, and have done since I became alert to the fragile mortality we possess years ago. It is times like this that reinforce that. Ram it home. I try and remember the lessons so that I don't have to re-learn them the hard way.

Life is good. Go out side get some sky and some wind. Drink some water and give thanks for survival. Do this rather than giving in to despair, to quarreling, to fixating on the problems of America, or vengance or Bushes failings, or Bin Ladens lunacy. Find the positives from this. People can and are drawing together from this tragedy, just as they can give way to anger, hate and arguments both in the streets of Dallas or on a public message board.

Let us pull together. None of us here is a suicidal terrorist, so let us be glad of each others views, as hurtful or "wrong" they may be. Conversely let us show sensativity at this time. Emotions - fear, confusion, anger, patriotism, a sense of violation and trepidation of times to come - are running high. Fuses are short. When the dust settles (literally) there will be time for self analysis, time for change, time for directional assessment. For now let us be as one. One in our humanity and in the very fact that we are alive.

Hallelujah.

Well said, Yorick.

And if someone who has been in there can have that attitude, how can anyone else even think of spouting hate?

May your god be with you, Yorick, and with all America.

Great post and thoughts, though, Yorick.
Don't let anyone put you down, Dio!

Dio, LOL! I thought most of your posts were typically Diogenic : well-phrased, well-thought-out, and never intentionally hurtful or provocative, and I'm still very glad to have you here!!

Yorick, thanks for your post and I cannot say how relieved I am that you're OK. I was so worried! *hug*

Thanks guys! Wow. I'm speechless.

I was in Union square last night. Lit a "Peace" made from mini candles, joined in a singalong with dancing and persussionists. Climbed up a lampost and watched an incredible scene. In one area were the aforementioned singers, in another a large group were gathered around a memorial pole surrounded by candles flowers and cards. These people were reflecting, contemplating, meditating and praying. Over to the far right of them was another group of people debating, discussing and sometimes slipping into heated exchange. It was intoxicating. It had such a historical primal feel about it. I called out a retort to something one fellow was ranting, but otherwise spent time observing or calming down a few emtionally charged exhanges - some racially based, some ideologically. As the saying goes "A gentle answer turns away wrath."

It actually reminded me of this forum in the way total strangers were exchanging views. Does this forum fill a void that this isolative modern society has created?

I also reflected on how someone like Jesus spontaneously held a crowd like such. Oh the personal magnetism, boldness and oratorial skills he must have possessed!

There is such emotion in the air. People are ready to fight but have no-one to fight against. They are ready to help, but there are too many volunteers. Inaction can breed frustration and frustration breeds explosion. Understanding, grace, patience and tolerance are all virtues in this most unusual time.

Well spoken once again

It must truly be exhilirating, but sometimes frigthening seeing, feeling, living with all of that emotion around.

Thanks mate.

I stayed with a friend overnight, who last night wouldn't have been anywhere else, yet woke up this morning wanting to leave New York. The pendulum can swing quite far it seems. I've had no thoughts of leaving though. Rather this strengthens my resolve to stay.
We're having another prayer meeting tonight.

I have another friend from Australia leaving by plane today (hopefully).

Bush should be in the city soon I believe.

I get the feeling you are 'living history' at the moment. It is something you will tell to future generations, and with your eloquence you will convey to them the amazing atmosphere of the time and the place, just as you are to us.

Stay safe, Yorick.
