Davros is right, the Belt of Encircling Scale is random treasure. I recall that, on Galadria's game, she found it in the same barrel, then something happened and she had to re-load, and went back to the barrel and it was something completely different! On my advice, she re-loaded again three times, and on the fourth try got it back. So, get Sharwyn or Tomi and open those chests, Cloudy. (Sharwyn can pick locks, too, and looks much better doing it. )

I wish I had known about the belt before I tried taking down that annoying spider. It was not *fun* with a level 5 mage and Tomi as my henchman. Took about seven reloads, and I finally summoned a boar, and my familiar, (a pixie) and it died without killing anything! *YAY!* Please tell me Guhran is easier...

If you are a Wizard or Sorc you might consider Fireball it does a lot of damage to spiders.

Minor spoilers: Though there is no "set" path through the districts, there is an order that the game leads you through them if you let it. If you speak to Aribeth and ask if she has heard anything about where the creatures are, she will direct you to a single district. After you finish that district, she directs you to the next one, etc. The order she tells you is Peninsula, Beggars, Blacklake, Docks. If you have not done the Peninsula yet, you might want to finish that one first. This will give you some much needed levels to handle both the spider and other threats that you will face afterwards. Once you get to level 5, and you have the cash, buy the Lesser Amulet of Health from Aribeth. It protects from both poison and disease (you'll need the immunity to disease later ). Memorize Summon Creature spells in most of your slots, and rest before you meet the spider. Summon a creature, use your bard song, and have your henchman (and you) use missile weapons. Start the combat by casting Sound Burst on the spider (you probably have a ton of those scrolls by this point). Give command to Attack Nearest. This will cause your summoned creature to be the tank (it is expendable). When the creature gets to Badly injured, start summoning the next creature, and target it in between you and the spider (about half way). Move back if you need to give room between you and the spider. Melee as a last resort, and only if the spider is near death. If the combat starts to turn against you (or if the spider gets too close to you and are unable to summon something to get in between you in time), use the stone of recall, then walk back. This allows you to re-enter combat on your own terms (i.e. at a distance). Hopefully this helps (that is a bugger of a fight, but there are a few more ahead of you in the Beggar's Nest. Best to finish the Peninsula first, since I found it not as hard).

YEEHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! I DID IT!LOL, well, I got through that spider and Gulnan and the rest of the Beggar's Nest except that annoying 'strange bldg' I got Tomi for the fight with the dire bloated spider. My bard called a dire boar before entering the room and she cast bull strength on herself and Tomi. Also took bless potion and used crossbow for a bit then a +1 club and shield. BUT what did the spider the most damage in one try was the rod of frost and yes, THANKS for the tip, Willard, soundburst! She had a scroll and had ability to use it (magical device). And Davros...HAHAHAHA! Gulnan was a frustrating fight at first, but 1 reload and 2 respawns (one for my bard and one for Linu) is all it took!
