Welcome to The Board, LANKST !!!!!

I know, that I'm late,
...but ...I thought, you should know.

I'm...with you...in spirit
.........where ever....you...go.

To ID items...you need the Artifacts skill ( not to be confused with, ...Artifacts of stone, fire..etc )...or the the trait...Ancient Lore. There is no magic, involved. You can learn the skill/trait at various guilds...and increase it, by training at the guild...or by allocating points...when you level up.

We always give warm receptions. That way we get to keep the visitors on our lovely board allowing us to broaden our society and knowledge. Not to mention the evolution in this forum. Packrat is now a master poet and he includes his lovely little poems in every post. Not ot mention our travelled bard whose stories our known throughout the Serran.

To keep up with my picky nature I would like to make a correction of packrat´s post. In the sentence

I would like to exchange "or" to AND. You need the trait to be able to learn artifacts.

Willow and Packrat have explained what you need to learn. Until you can, here's a helpful hint. Put all similar items into the inventory of ONE character. That way when you identify one all other items that are the same (within the one characters inventory) will also be identified saving you some $ at least.

You're most welcome, LANKST. We like having new folks in here, and are glad that you've joined us.

To add one more thing into the mix... try to make sure you have at least two of the item. You pay as much to identify as you get for knowing what it is. For example, if a sword sells for 12gp and you can identify it for 5gp, the identified sword will sell for 17gp. IOW, you gain nothing from identifying.

When you get the merchant trait later on, you pay less for identifying, so you can make some money, But that's not for a while.

So if you have three swords as above, identify one sword for 5gp, and the other two swords are identified as well (provided they're in the same backpack). You can then sell all of the for 17gp each, making a profit of 10gp overall. It's legal. And effective. And not arbitrage...
