The name Vulcan was around long before Star Trek, it's the name of a god in either Roman or Greek mythology, I always get the 2 confused.

Vulcan for Roman and Hephaestos for Greek I think

I know the name's been around since mythology. I was referring to the planet though

Nope. It is leftover junk that wasn't used to make planets.

that's what I thought. Haven't found any definitive source on this though

An amusing thing btw. The Mystara milieu for D&D uses a solar system like ours and it calls the former-planet asteroid belt "Damocles" LOL!!

NO, not enough mass. The whole thing ways about 1/4 what the moon does I seem to recall. I think the most likly explanation is that two objects about 1/8 the mass of the moon coalesced in a similar or intersecting orbit and then impacted or otheriwse destoyed each other.

Vulcan was a name for a tenth planet, but it was applied to a hypothetical planet that was observed *inside* mercury orbit. It appeared on stellar maps for two or three years until they realised that nobody else could match the sighting.
