personally, i prefer the fighter/mage combo. awesome spells, and still able to dish out some hefty damage. even as a human, you can go to say 5th level as a fighter, become specialized in a longbow, and a sword, then dual to a mage, and you have a mage, with good hp's, and can use a sword and longbow. i have a fighter/mage with bladesingers chainmail, and the foebane+5 longsword, and i use the one handed fighting style. or two weapon style, whichever suits me at the time. bards are fun to play too.......

why does everyone bitch about how paladin's rewards suck? They're PALADINS. In D&D rules, you could only own 10 magical items and had to donate something like 90% of your gold to temples/worthy causes...

It's the price for the cool abilities you gain, just like Mages have to memorize spells daily, monks can't wear armor, etc...

we can stand here debating forever which class is best, or we can help this guy with his problem! which will you do?

------------------
It's simple. Once the Planet is hurt, it gathers Spirit Energy to heal the injury. The amount of energy gathered depends on the size of the injury...What would happen if there was an injury that threatened the very life of the Planet? Think how much energy would be gathered! Ha, ha, ha. And at the center of that injury, wil be me. All that boundless energy will be mine. By merging with the energy of the Planet, I will be come a new life form, a new existence. Melding with the Planet, I will cease to exist as I am now. Only to be reborn as a 'God' to rule over every living soul.

before TOB comes out, the dominating class in dueling is all fighter based

the order is like this

conjunor dual to fighter at low level (mainly imported from BGI)
werwolf druid dual fighter
barb
berserker/any fighter dual to thief
berserker dual mage
inquister
mage/cleric
monk
mage

in mplayer games, paladins are generally the best tanks in good hands
they get many spells that a normal fighter does not
paladins have natual ability to turn undead (a bonus vs vampire)
certain kit is immune to many negative effect
inquistr has powerful dispel and VERY useful True Sight
paladins can use Holy Avenger
paladins can specialize in any weapon a fighter can (which means, -2 thac0 compare to a fighter at same level, not much difference)
paladins have a natual high ability score

generally, paladin kicks ass in mplayer
fighter owns in duel
mages suck all time (in comparison, of course.)

wurm, you quite obviously do not possess the heart or patience to play a paladin, which is based on almost blindly following a strict code of ethics.
as far as the order treating you differently. you're just some dude in shiny armor to them. from a rp perspective, no you wouldn't be happy with a paladin. from a powergaming point, theyre actually very tough: various immunities, improved saving throws, tons of prot from evil, and some badass innate abilities.

i recommend you gloss back over the class descriptions in the manual and when you get to one that makes you say "that's pretty cool", try that one.

personally i like thieves and cant stand their stronghold either.

Paladins can be excellent if you're prepared to play as a Lawful Good character. That means being honest, upstanding, chivalrous and noble. They are the only class that can wield Carsomyr (one of the better weapons in the game) and they have an interesting quest which does require to you use some of the paladin-specific powers (Detect Evil is one of them). If you are playing through to ToB the cavalier can be a very powerful class.
