well, i just tried to install apache http server but my winxp pro machine doesnt run it properly. I can see my webpage, but when i send teh link to other ppl , they say that it doesnt work. i went to the Apache website and read the FAQ and they said that u need SP1 for it to work properly. I got SP1 and reinstalled Apache but the same problem persists. Any suggestions? If anyone knows any free alternatives to Apache, can u please let me know? Thanks

Well there's IIS that comes with winxp - why don't you try that? I've used it and it's pretty easy to use. Go to Add/Remove programs and windows components in control panel.
You sure you have your firewall set up correctly to allow public traffic through? There are loads of places where a messed up security setting can mean no one gets in.

Its been a while since I've played with apache. What networking do you have? Firewalls will have to be told to allow apache to listen on port 80, routers wil have to be told to forward port 80 to your webserver, and make sure your handing out the right link - anything with localhost or 127.0.0.1 in it is pointing at your own machine, fine for testing but not much use else.
And turn off the winXP internal firewall if you havent already, its difficult to configure and not very secure. [ 01-19-2004, 05:21 PM: Message edited by: andrewas ]

adrewas, i tried to tinker around with the apache settings but it didnt help much. i dont have a firewall so i think the firewall part doesnt apply. i didnt ask other ppl to check 127.0.0.1 or localhost so dont worry about that. Yes, i got rid of the XP firewall as soon as i set up my internet
