Saz,
Well like Cloudy said, I too paid for my entire college education so I was very serious about it when I set my mind to get my degree. But I learned this the hard way, as my first college experience was not the most positive. I first went to college at 17 and goofed off my first year...but it was my age and immaturity that caused that. After an F or two, I got serious and went back with a vengenace, changing me from flake to Phi Theta Kappa. Unfortunately, if their folks are paying for their classes they might just be spoiled. Being that summer is almost here, "summeritis" will be affecting many a college student these days. If they are flaking out, it only hurts them. It surprises me how many people graduate both HS and College and don't retain hardly any of the knowledge of what they have studied. Is education just about passing tests and getting grades? No, its about learning, expanding your horizons and establishing social relationships. There are a lot of majors and courses of study that people can BS their way through. Some majors, like when I studied music could not be faked...when you're on stage doing a show, it is apparent rather quickly if you can play your instrument! Same with languages, you can't fake your way through speaking Spanish (you can try, but it won't work very well!). Can you give them an incomplete or hold their grades (worked at my college)? Knowing you, I imagine you are a great teacher, so please don't think its anything you've done. Probably just a bunch of preppy college brats who haven't got their priorities straight yet. Unfortunately, some people will have to fail a few times to realize their mistakes...which is THEIR loss, not yours! Good luck! Scronan P.S You could also try pizza, beer, and maybe some strippers? (kidding)

Hmmm... Senior Skip Day every monday? Sounds like a plan to me. Give them some sort of quiz on Tuesday. No matter how minor the grade it'll start to add up after awhile. Eventually those bums will learn that you mean business and start showing up. It amazes me how there are parents that let their kids stay home from school. Even if i'm sick my mom just tosses me a tylenol or something!!

A student DID finally show up at 9:45 a.m. (1 hour, 15 minutes late). His excuse? He couldn't get out of bed. Now THAT's disrespectful. I went on and taught him. Oh, I'm sure they'll be loaded with excuses tomorrow (the other ones) but this is NOT going to fly on the job, and as we're a job skills training school, they have got to understand that so many instances of that kind of behavior and they're out the door. Hopefully they'll catch on soon. -Saz

From my experience, trying to force pupils to come to your classes by making a test or quiz on tuesday will only lower their respect for you and will probarbly end up just where you started or worse.
I would go with what Wolfgir mentioned, bribes! Or simply, hold the class on a lawn or something and serve coffee or lemonade. You get a huge respect fo teachers who do this sort of thing, spontaneous things (I'm not saying you don't have respect now, which I'm sure you do!) and then the pupils will show up, even on monday mornings. And also I don't think giving them bad grades is an answer, unless of course they really deserve it, since that will only cause aggrevation. Bribing is the answer! In my classes on every Syllabus, it states that Class attendance and participation are part of your grade.....Id mark the suitably low.
But then Im a hard ass |

Saz, I know that it's not you. The type of person in your classes are going to lean towards that behavior.
A cousin of mine teaches at a similar level, and he holds their grades. Many of them are on scholarship, or on programs (Texas Workforce, Texas Workman's Comp, or probation) and NEED their grades to remain eligible. Give 'em HELL, buddy !

Definitely lower grades or do the tests. I'm sorry but 'bribes' all around all the time is tantamount to begging them to do what they should do ON THEIR OWN...sheesh.. why are they even in school? You're right, Saz, the real work world won't tolerate "I couldn't get out of bed." as an excuse for not showing up to work. The sooner they learn that the better their chances in life, if they mean to work at all.
