Did Gamespot fire Gerstmann over a poor Eidos review?
Apparently the rumor mill is in full swing. Senior Gamespot editor Jeff Gerstmann was fired last week, allegedly coincidentally with a review of his slamming Kane & Lynch, the latest FPS from Eidos, who is a major advertiser at Gamespot. Full story here: http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/11/...ot-inside.html.
Although there is no concrete evidence to link the two events, gamers have already decided that Gerstmann's firing was a knee-jerk reaction from Gamespot due to financial pressure placed on them by an irate Eidos. Many gamers have organized boycotts of Gamespot because of the firing, claiming that Gamespot's reviews have lost all credibility because of the situation. As of today, the Eidos Kane & Lynch ads are no longer running at Gamespot, although it is unknown whether this is actually due to a response over the firing rumor in the gaming community or whether the promotion had actually run its course.

They say no, but then why did they remove the review?

Is that why all games these days are overhyped and rated 10/10? Fear of angering the sponsors?

Re: Did Gamespot fire Gerstmann over a poor Eidos review?
Here's an idea that could put some gaming website on the map... create a crawler that grabs all the game ratings from all the different gaming sites - similar to a bunch of metarankings sites. But in addition to compiling the metascore... show the ranking outlilers (like if a game is ranked 5/10 overall but gamespot gives it a 10). If a sites sponsored by the publisher of the reviewed game... then put an asteriks by the review so we all know it.
Then you could do some cool stuff like publish the overall ranking of a game and next to it the ranking of 'sponsored sites'. |
