the only random games I buy have to be under 20 bucks. some of those are really good. so sometimes it is worth taking a chance.

Usually I buy after reading several reviews, both in print and on-line.

I buy random games if I've heard praise for them on IWF. Neverwinter Nights was a case in point, though the $10 price tag helped matters.

I play test the games first at the computer shop before I decide to buy them. In that way I don't have to buy the wrong games.

definitely read reviews!!! and play the demo!

I mean I loved the EMPIRES: Dawn of Modern world and Age of Nations reviews

But the game just sucks!

It has all the right ideas but terrible game play in my opinion

Yeah, I like to research games before I buy them, though on a 56k I'm not likely to download the demo.

I fall for the cheap ones, and anything that looks remotely interesting at places like Half-Priced Books. I found a game from 2003 for $9 that was about $50 next door at Circuit City (IL2 Stumovik's expansion). Of course it was used, but used games don't bother me as long as everything's there.

Next door I also saw a game that I got last year for $25, now priced at $45. The company even said they wanted it under $30, because it was really an expansion (AOW: Shadow Magic). Game prices confuse me.

I. with a phone hook-up, can't even think about dounloading a demo. for any game, so I go for the ratings and most of the times I get suck into stupid games. A coupla months ago I bought a game that was #1 the year before "Prince of Persia". The game look good, played good terrific graffics and so on. Only when I have to leave the game to have dinner I foun out that I coul not save the game unless I get to certain point in the game. So the game is in my game "sellar" collecting dust, same thing with "Lord of the rings". Now you see what I mean?

Popularity of games is tricky too. Games like Medal of Honor and Battlefield 1942 always got high ratings from what I saw. While fun in their own silly ways, the ridiculously low realism bothered me. In BF 1942 the first thing you notice as a German trooper is that you're holding a gun from 1944 lol. Troopers in both games are too bulletproof. I didn't think they could hold a candle to World War 2 Online, which got (and deserved) horrible ratings in its first couple of years, but infantry play (eventually) became so much more than any of the aforementioned.

Always check out reviews first. Unless I've heard good things about the game, or if it is a sequel to a game I know. I don't trust most of the online reviews though. They usually seem biased to say the least.
