(to mods: If this in any way violates the TOS - I know I'm touching dangerous ground here - I sincerely apologize. Please PM me and delete the message instantly if so.)
Am I just stupid or is something wrong here?
Please comment the following.

First of all this is not an "I have have a friend" story because I have more friends and two of them (and a guy that used to be my friend) are involved in this

pre-story:
guy A used to be one of my closest friends in high-school until he hit rock bottom smoking marihuana and I couldn't get him out there despite a lot of trying and basically just abandoned him to keep myself away from all this (I'm not proud of it ). When I say rock bottom I mean it because - believe me - you CAN get a "pot-junkie" despite the nice way some movies like to ridicule this drug.
However I (and my other friends) still see him occasionally but not often; mostly at concerts or open-air festivals as we share a common taste of music.

story:
Now me and my three closest friends were at such an open-air and met him there.
He was of course "equipped" and passed around. Me and my best friend stayed out of it because we really don't need that kind of crap.
My other two friends X (who occasionally) and Y (on a less than twice/year basis) however participated.
They (X+Y) were - *surprise at a public event* - caught by the cops along with A's girlfriend.
Now this is not as bad an offense in Austria as it is in the US or some other countries but still illegal. It is however treated quite liberally here and basically what happens in such a case is that you get booked and eventually prosecuted (resulting in a small fine) IF the case is processed in less than two years (which is rare as police force is overworked and has something better to do than to prosecute stupid twenty-somewhats for - basically - being stupid).
So they were taken to a police-container and had to make a written testimony each. Now Y and A's girl testified truly and apologized for that "one-time error". X did so too but pretended to have lost his ID and gave a wrong name, adress and phone number.
After the situation was cleared up the following happened
A's girl and A went back home to
Y has vowed to make "less than twice a year" into NEVER EVER (and he seriously is the guy to keep that)
X was extremely proud of having screwed over the police
We all were kind of pissed at X because while Y stood up for his error he was being a smart-ass and extremly happy about that.

aftermath - actual story:

While processing the files the police - *surprise* - found out that X had used wrong data. They called Y and A's girlfriend to ask about X. Covering for him Y told the police that he did not know him that well but was going to find out about him and call back. He then called X and told him about the situation and that the officer had threatened to summon him to the station which would be especially bad for Y because he's a foreigner and has to fear that his work and stay permit get revoked for hindering justice.
NOW
While Y, my best friend and I try to convince X to turn himself in
X is extremely concerned with how he can keep screwing over the cops to get away again and demands that Y cover for him again using very-witty arguments of why they can't actually touch Y and he shouldn't be nervous if he' lying to the officer...or even better withholding information which is not technically lying anyway.
When we (actually I was the only one who dared to directly) told him that he is completely egomaniac he replied that the whole world is egomaniac and that he's justified by that. This then turned into an argument about society, law and morale. He basically stated that
+ he should not be compelled to follow a law if he doesn't like it
+ it is okay to let another guy take the fall if he falls less deep than you
+ he's not willing to stand up for his mistakes because he thinks they were no mistakes (despite being the cause of all this trouble now).

Boy was I (and that happens rarely). There seemed to be absolutely no reasoning with him.
So I'm not going to ask what to do because this doesn't concern me directly but I'm curious to know if I just missed one of his points. Am I justified to think that he's a complete "posterior-opening" or did I miss something important that miraculouslymakes him correct?

Padon my french but X seems like a selfish bastard. He should have realized the errors of his ways and changed like Y chose to instead of having Y take the fall for X's stupidity.

It is my entirely personal opinion that X is a living piece of garbage - not because he smokes pot, but because he is desperate for his friend to take the fall for him, when he wouldn't be in such a bad situation if it wasn't for his own rank arrogance and stupidity (a bad combination).

It is also my own personal opinion that if I were any of X's friends, I would drop X like a scorpion-infested jockstrap, and leave him to his eventual fate, which will probably involve a jail cell or a hospital bed if he continues to live his life by the 3 'rules' you mentioned.

Of course, this is just me

No offense but he does sound like an egotistical ass to me Faceman.

In my opinion he's not right in any of his points or arguements, because as such.

"He should not be compelled to follow a law if he doesn't like it."
-Heh, too bad. I'm sure there are a lot of laws people don't like but that doesn't give them the right to break them either. If he doesn't like it, he shouldn't have acted the way he did and get caught.

"It is okay to let another guy take the fall if he falls less deep than you."
-No, no not quite. This is the egotistical part coming in, he is no real friend if he makes others take the fall for what he did.

"He's not willing to stand up for his mistakes because he thinks they were no mistakes (despite being the cause of all this trouble now)."
-He knows what he did was wrong, he just doesn't want to take responsibility for it and would rather have someone else deal with it. This follows his first two beliefs.

You haven't missed anything, only if you had his way of thinking would you see any sense in his comments.

What an ass...All this drama to avoid a minor pot ticket? He's probably in bigger trouble now for giving false data to the cops. I wouldn't blame y for turning him in anyway, it seems x has created his own crappy situation and no one else should take a fall for him.

If you ask me they were all stupid for getting caught in the first place. Sure the moral high ground is "its against the law, so dont bitch if you get caught even if you think the law is silly" So the moral of the story is don't get caught.

No Cop = No Crime. I have smoked pot all my life, as recreation and as sacrament. Since I have never been caught I have commited no crime in my opinion because my conscience, religion, and expirience doesn't tell me it is wrong.

If you do get caught take responsibility for it. The worst thing you can do is let someone else take the fall for you. That's just despicable if you ask me.

Listen, just give his stuff up to the police and tell them what he did. It may be screwing him, but that is just how the world is in his perspective, so he gets what is coming to him. Logical no? Use the argument against him.

Here here! I totally agree with you, JrKAsparov! I think that this so-called 'friend' of yours either needs to revise his ideas of modern day society, or just find himself an island in the sun where he can play boss in his own world.

Wow, that guy has a ego!

Anyway I used to smoke it, some years ago, it was just a way to get out of everydays life boredom... I stopped when one of my friend was caught with it, the law for it here is similar to the one in Austria, but the fine is much bigger and then his employer found out about it and he lost his job which in turn led to his girlfriend breaking up with him (b****), I watched my good friend simply go from a pretty good guy to a complete bum and thought, "This isn't worth it..." and have never done it since...
