After recieving an "NTDETECT failed" message on my computer (win 2000,1.8 GH, 128 mb), I knew to re-install Windows 2000. Will this overwrite my previous game files such as BG2 or other files like kazaa?

well it depends what kind of reinstall you do. If you do a totally new instillation then you will lose everything as your HDD's will be formatted. Try a repair. That should work and you won't lose anything.
