Well, I've been using Audiogalaxy and was very satisfied with it, but now they seem to have followed in Napster's footprints and you can only download music wich has been authorized by the artists themselves, which is practically none.
So now I'm looking for a new (free) program, does anyone have any suggestions?

I know a lot of people have Kazaa...but I think there have been problems with it lately...

ah, here it is:

"We have just finished a study that shows how user interface
design flaws allow users on Kazaa to share their personal files without their knowledge.
In a laboratory user study, only 2 out of 12 subjects were able to correctly determine that Kazaa was
sharing their entire hard drive. We looked at the current Kazaa network and discovered that many users
are sharing personal information such as email and data for financial programs such as Microsoft Money.
To see if other users on Kazaa were aware of this and taking advantage of users ignorance, we ran a
Kazaa client for 24 hours with dummy personal files. During this time, files named "Inbox.dbx" and
"Credit Cards.xls" were downloaded from our client by several unique users. The tech report is online, or
see our lab web page."

Not sure what report that is from...

Does anyone know of any Kazaa alternatives?

I used to use Audiogalaxy as well, and i found that it worked really well and had a huge variety of music on there.

The problem is-- Audiogalaxy rather secretly installs Adware on your computer. basically, when you install it you are also installing two or three other hidden programs that monitor your cookies and internet activity, and will prompt unusual ad pop-ups aimed at advertisting things depending on what websites you visit. not only is this sneaky, but a complete invasion of privacy. funnily enough, i uninstalled all the Adware from my comp (with a program called Ad-aware) and this "mysteriously" deletes the uninstall file for Audiogalaxy as well, so you cannot get rid of it. kind of a "punishment", i guess. i certainly do NOT like programs being installed on my comp that i don't know about and that cannot be removed in a straightforward way, let alone the whole invasion of privacy issue.

if you don't care about having your internet activity monitored, i guess it doesn't matter. but when these few Adware programs are running they slow down other programs, use up RAM needlessly, and can cause other programs to crash. i know on my computer these Adware programs prevented me from ever shutting down my computer properly if i ever started Audiogalaxy. READ the user agreement before clicking "OK". they actually mention this sneaky tactic in there, but most people don't take the time to read that stuff anyway.

Be aware of this.

Theres also morpheus which usualy turns up what I want, although sometimes acutaly downloading the stuff has been problematic. Dont think it installs any spyware,ad-aware didnt detect any, but several of my brothers searches have turned up child porn videos and other dodgy material.

Add in the fact that these programs are also used to transfer highly illegal and immoral materials, as well as copyrighted documents (d&d manuals are out there, so I hear) and maybe they come under the ToS prohobition on discussing warez materials.

Hmm, yeah well as you say, I would never do anything like that.
And I know that there are programs that lets you exchange other files than music with others, but I was looking for a program that deals only with music (like Audiogalaxy) 'cause I don't trust any of those other, more questionable programs
