Is anyone using spears? I've found about two decent spears, the impaler and some other, but I've never used them in battle since you find them some way into the game. Is there any decent spear early on or are they just a waste?

They appear to be a bit of a waste. There's a good one in the crypts under the graveyard district, but nobody even seems to have a proficiency point in them. The same goes for halberds, too. I suppose they're seen more as weapons for the hired man-at-arms rather than the travelling hero.

I actually had Jaheira using the Impaler for a while, the +10 damage was too good to pass up.

Well, in that case my next hero will have grand mastery in spears, just to check it out. Or maybe in halberds.

I think the only major drawback of using spears for Jaheira is Armor Class. My Jaheira is now fighting with a spear but her AC won't go much lower than -3/-4. When she's using one of the many fabulous shields that the game has, you can get her down to -8/-9 easily, perhaps even lower. Unfortunately, the one-handed weapons available to her do a lot less damage than for example the impaler. I'd have her keep a shield, impaler and one-handed weapon (i.e. scimitar or club) in her inventory all the time and swap them according to whether you need a low AC or a lot of damage.

Malchor Harpell. Yes, he backs you into corners, hounds you at every opportunity, imprisons your whole party. Like a salesman with a vengeance.
