A shoplifter was detained in my store ,attempting to just stroll out with 2 dvd's tucked inside a folded newspaper. He was stopped and the two dvds were placed on a counter near the door. No cop was in sight so the guy decided to leave. (we can't touch shoplifters in order to detain them, against company policy) When he got to the door again the alarm beeped again, indicating that an active securty tag was present. He was hailed back by the Asst. Manager who asked to look thorugh his bag. Surprisingly the guy obliged, until the employee's attention was drawn elsewhere. Then he grabbed the two dvd's that he originally tried to steal and walked out the door, ignoring cries that the cops had been called and he better come back. The only fives minute of any given day that the BPD isn't standing on our corner and BAM! we get thugged. We have thieves everyday that try to run out into the subway with cd players or video games even though the little cop stand with 1-3 officers on duty is TEN feet from the store's front door, but this guy takes the cake! I dont want to touch shoplifters, but maybe just hitting them with a stick would suffice.

I know how you feel, I was buying some auto parts and I watched a guy unwarp some audio parts and shove them in his pockets and head to the door, I told the manager who was two rows over, and he said "Well I didn't see him put them in his clothing so there is nothing I can do." and people wonder why things are as expensive as they are...all that stolen merchandise is covered by insurance, which is paid for by people paying higher prices....lovely.

Unfortunatly we have no insurance to cover our losses and My job is on the line when it comes to shrinkage figures for the store. Considering my clientel and location Its a challenge every day. Fortunately I do have police in and near my store all the time. Its freaking hilarious to see someone run out with merchandise and run right into a cop. LOLOLOL! Happens all the time. I have developed a reputation for standing in my doorway yelling "stop thief" and "we have your face on film!" becuase company policy also prohibits chasing them. I need attack dogs...sic the thief!!!!!!

And yes, people stealing music, either from a store or on-line, IS the reason why CD's are 20 bucks a pop, that and all the champagne breakfasts the entertaiment industry has. DVD's are next....

If someone was stealing some of my stuff I would chase them and them nail them.

well , maybe you cant chase them , but that doesnt mean you cant get some miscreant kids to do it. When I was a wee juvinile delinquent you could have hired me and my friends to beat up escapeing shoplifters for the price of a case of beer and some smokes.
