Does anyone understand the rules about Kamas?

Now that there there are some nice ones about I thought it would be nice to build a Monk to use them.

But how? The manual is less than clear as to how Kamas work with the unarmed strike feat.

If I want to dual-wield do I need to get the ambidexterity/two weapon feats to use Kamas to best effect. So far as I can see, I lose 4 points off my AB as soon as I try to dual wield without ambidexterity etc, which suggests I do have to get these feats.

BTW I like the flying dragons Z. Caught me completely by surprise when I met them.

where were the flying dragons? I have not done much exploring as I have been working on my official side project for a while now.

I would build a dex based monk build with the ambi/two weapon fighting feats to get the best use out of the kamas.

The monk can use kamas at the same speed as his unarmed attacks.

I understand the rules about Kama's

You will need Ambidexterity/TWF/(possibly ITWF) to dual-wield effectively, so either get nine ranger levels or take a few fighter levels for bonus feats. You should take these levels before L20, because we'd want to keep the AB of the character high.

The monk has a unique AB progression when using the Kama or fighting unarmed. Essentially, the attack progression works by decreasing in units of 3 instead of 5, and there is a bonus attack.

E.g. Billy the monk has an AB of 21. He is armed with a kama. His attack pattern looks as, 21/18/15/12/9.

If Billy was just a figher with a Kama, the attack pattern would be 21/16/11/6.

Give a monk character a second Kama and you are laughing... 6 attacks. Get improved two weapon fighting, 7 attacks. Pop on a item that gives haste, 8 attacks.

Thank you T-D-C and Dace.

I was beginning to suspect I would have to go that way to dual wield and now you've confirmed it.

What a pain. That's the last time I listen to the kama salesmen.

And its the ancient black dragons on level 12 that now fly. More and more new things seem to be moving into Undermountain

Ahhh the dragons dropping from the ceiling ?

Are they the ones that used to be statues?? cause I think they have always done that.

Or are they flying round the room now?

*ducks the falling dragon poo*

*in the very disgruntled weapon merchant voice* Did you expect them to perform as unarmed attacks, then? Of course you shall have to take feats to dual wield weapons effectively, unless, of course, you are a Ranger, in which case you get them for free.

But if you want them free you will have to take 9 ranger levels.

Yep, that's true for improved two weapon fighting, however, you get the standard dual wield for free at first lvl...
