This beggars belief - sex change for 12 Y.O.
Maybe I am old fashioned, but I was genuinely stunned by this breaking news from Australia.
- - - - - - - - A Family Court judge has allowed a 12-year-old girl, who wants to become a boy, to begin hormone treatment. The court heard that the girl has thought of herself as a boy since she was four years old. Her mother made an application on her behalf, for her to begin hormone treatment to stop her pubertal development, the first step in a process which, if continued, would allow her to pursue life as a boy. 'The court heard her father objected to the treatment, and sent her a text message saying, "I want the little girl, not some girl that thinks she is a boy". But the judge heard the girl yelled at her father she would kill herself if she had to live as a girl. The judge ruled the hormone treatment was in her best interests. The Family Court orders also permit her to apply for a new birth certificate, passport and Medicare card in a boy's name.' ABC news

...12 years old? Seems a bit young to make that kind of decision. She may be right, she may be wrong, but it's just too young.
If she's right? Good on her. She'll live a nice life. But if she's wrong... well, "whoopsie" doesn't cut it in this case. |

The research says that people are pretty sure at that age... the problem is, they are generally made to wait and the treatments and such are much more effective when started before puberty.
Way for the father to be unconditionally accepting.

I've always found that many who declare unconditional acceptance are often the least accepting of those who are less accepting than they see themselves to be. What kind of double standard is that?

What exactly should I accept about this? And where did I claim to be accepting? I can be very intolerant. I'm intolerant towards ignorance, for starters. I'm intolerant of parents who make their children's lives more difficult than they already are. I'm intolerant of a wide range of -isms, and I'm astonishingly unaccepting towards the misuse of apostrophes. Then again, I don't have any children. It's not my job to be accepting. A parent's job, on the other hand...

The judge never consider ruling the girl to go to some serious counseling or perhaps to a mental hospital?

Exactly what I was thinking, though perhaps the mental ward seems perhaps a bit extreme. But, I would wait on saying she can begin the hormone therapy until a psychological professional could say that it was indeed a warranted course of action. Here's a fact for the little girl, it doesn't matter what kind of drugs they pump into her or what body parts they remove, or try to add; genetically and therefore factually she'll still be a female. Most other girls that relate to guys better than their own gender live perfectly normal lives in a totally unaltered unmutilated female body. They just happen to act more like the guys. What's the motivation to have a doctor carve you up for the sake of become an imitation of a male?

Re: This beggars belief - sex change for 12 Y.O.
From the version of this story which I read
"Medical experts, including a psychiatrist and endocrinologist, as well as state officials in Victoria, supported the case, but the girl's father opposed the sex change in part because of her young age" So she has already had counselling for this - maybe she's right.

But the point remains, no matter how many operations or drugs they pump into her, she's still a girl. The only way to change that is to alter her genetics, which as far as I've heard isn't doable yet.
