Really ? Couldn't find anything about it on the Web sites of the two newspapers I read - and neither on the CNN page you mention ...

Smoke could be seen rising from the famous Paris monument. The 1,069-feet iron-laced tower in Paris draws 6 million visitors a year. USA TODAY Officials said they were not sure whether anyone was on the top level, where the fire appeared to have erupted. The company that operates the Eiffel Tower confirmed the fire but gave no details as to its origin and had no information about whether anyone may have been injured in the blaze, which appeared to be limited to a top floor of the monument. The 1,069-feet iron-laced tower draws 6 million visitors a year, making it the world's most popular paying tourist attraction. The tower was built by Gustav Eiffel for the 1889 World's Fair [ 07-22-2003, 02:01 PM: Message edited by: Ziroc ]

Yes, it just appeared on the Web site of the French paper I was reading, between my first post and this one. Funny, that you get French news before I do !
No more information yet. Funny too, that the CNN article gives waaay more information than the French one. And thanks for caring about France. EDIT : Photo from the LCI site : They say that the fire is now over, and that nobody was hurt. The police says that it started in an electric box (? I don't know the word for that), the Mayor staff says it started in an elevator. Go figure. [ 07-22-2003, 02:19 PM: Message edited by: Moiraine ]

The Tower is just another example of shoddy construction. They didn't even take the scaffolding down.
On a serious note, it's at least good that nobody was injured, which is what's important.
