Is it possible to force links to open in the same window unless I choose otherwise? As opposed to opening in a new window? If yes, how? If no, is there a browser around that does it?

Right click => copy link location

Paste in location bar

Restart Firefox and go to Tools > Options... (Edit > Preferences... under Linux and Mac OS X), select Advanced and click on Tabbed Browsing. The following options should be visible:
Force links that open new windows to open in:
the same tab/window as the link
a new tab

damn I've got a wussy Harper avatar now! This crap just doesn't get better does it? I want my dracolych back! I'd settle for a gandalf the pimp avatar!

Nope. There's no "Force links that open new windows to open in:" under Tabbed Browsing.

Here are two extensions that might help you:

Tab Mix
I am using the 0.1.6 version because it is stable...

Tabbrowser Extensions
This extension has a good selection of features but it is also very unstable. Use it at your own risk.

Thanks, Paladin, Tab Mix did it.

Thanks, Vaskez, at least you tried. Unlike Johnny.

An easier approach, depending on your version (I'm on 1.04): Tools, options, advanced, Tabbed Browsing. Lets you specify whether links open in a new window, new tab, or current window.

Or you could just right-click on it and select open in new window or open in new tab.

Visit the URL about:config
Find the pref 'browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs', and set it to true (the filter box up the top will help). Then the option Vaskez mentioned will be there. This is hidden by default since it apparently causes instability on some setups.
And yes, Tab Mix is excellent for this (and alot of other stuff).
