Clerics of Lathander (Morninglords) are better direct offensive casters, and Dreadmasters are better support casters. As previously mentioned, Dreadmasters will get more wisdom and they also have the Tyrant's Dictum (+1 to DC of their spells - harder to save against). A dreadmaster with the Greater Spell Focus feat in Enchantment can paralyse or neutralize enemies for your fighters to go to town on.

If your party is built on spellbombers and a decoy, go with the Morninglord. If built more for straight-up grunts, go with the Dreadmaster. Or just roleplay, and pick the one that fits the party concept the best.

apart from these two, what would be the positions of the other faiths wrt clerics as far as spell power and fighting prowess are concerned? i'm talking as part of a group and not for solo though interedted parties could add that too.

Hmm.. Let's see... Oghma comes ith some handy spells, bu nothin spectacular. Tempus is the best fighting cleric there is, Ilmater is alo good. Dreadmaster rules with specil efects spells for stunning, paralyzing and otherwise stopping the enemy. Lathander is a damage disciple and Talos can also work there as well. Helm can be handy, but not powerfull in either way. Others are not so noteworthy.
