What do you mean ladyZ, that happens all the time down here, haven't you gotten used to it?

There are few things I dislike about particular people. Shallowness is one, as I can't stand people who regard others as "inferior" or "incapable." I despise the common usage of poser, since it is most often used incorrectly (one of my skater pet peeves).

Some things that everybody does, and most cannot help doing, is stereotyping and criticizing. I try not to do both, but I know I do them frequently. I had one incident yesterday where someone was criticizing me on "skating ethics" because they saw my KnoW skateboarding shirt..

One last thing, I dislike it when people misinterpret things. Skater is often referred to as punk, but I'm one and not the other. AND, when most say they have a skateboard, they don't mean they ride it, it is more of an accessory (see I'm criticizing right now).

I'm taking my sheets outta the washer now, and I'll hang them up to dry..

There are probably going to be some people that hate me for saying this, but my biggest pet peeve is bad grammar. I hate seeing the total desecration of the written (and typed) English language, and it's sad to say, many people insist on doing it. And it's everywhere it seems, whether it's in emails, in chats, or whatever. I can understand typos and small mistakes; those things happen sometimes, especially when you're typing really fast. But it still irks me. And I know I'm not perfect either, and I really do get mad at myself when I see mistakes. But that's my biggest dislike.

I hope it doesn't discourage anyone from talking to me.

I'd understand verbal, but written? You'd have to be an English major to have perfect grammar. Sentence structure, word usage, noun-adjective agreement.. all that stuff is beyond simple terms (I'm an exception, taking Latin does help your English) I hope I don't insult you in any way, shape, or form, but it is just hard for me to comprehend someone who is offended by word "shortcuts"

I think it's just an expectation I built up over many years of reading and writing. You know, teachers always harping on you about having good grammar, and the well-edited books. I guess I got kind of spoiled by it, and now I expect to see it in everything written. Seeing mistakes in something that should be correct (such as newspapers and books) is the one that really gets me. I understand that most people don't have the grasp, so I let it slide when I'm reading stuff from people in emails and in messages. It doesn't bother me as much.

Shortcuts are difficult for me to read sometimes. I studied linguistics in college, so when I see something that's not written correctly in English, I sometimes have a huge problem trying to figure out what it says. And I guess because I don't have a hard time with it at all, I expect the same of others. A wrong assumption on my part, but it's kind of ingrained itself into my head.

I agree entirely about the turn signals.

And Lord Starshadow, it is so nice to have someone else with the same pet peeve! Yippee! Nano, I don't think he means absolute perfect grammar on everyone on this board (although it would be nice if some folks learned to use punctuation), but in the printed word especially. Presumably, the editor of a book or newspaper is being PAID to edit and correct, not to sit on his thumbs. A lot of folks take their cue on what is right and proper (in writing techniques) by what they see, and some appalling stuff is being accepted.

Good writing is expected in printed documents, and when writing is on display to the public, it should look professional. We do often and mistakenly judge people on "first appearances", which, in certain settings, may be the work displayed. I've been startled and dismayed in hospitals to find health displays or nurses' boards with grammar mistakes on a fifth-grade level. Tell me, if your nurse or doctor cannot figure out that the plural of "calendar" does not include an apostrophe, do you trust them with your medications? If they can't do fifth-grade English, do you really trust them with more than fifth-grade math?

Oh, well, enough of my griping!

Ah, OK, I understand your meaning. We had a go in my history class about an excerpt in our history books, here let me see if I can find it..

From The Enduring Vision
p. 130

"an unseen foe, Braddock's troops retreated. Nine hdred regular and provincial soldiers died in Braddock's defeat, including the general himself, compared to just twenty-three on the French side.
Following this engagement, Indian raids convulsed Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and even parts of New Jersey--all colonies that had escaped attack in previous wars. Meanwhile, neither of two Anglo-American armies that marched against the French fortresses at Niagara and Crown Point in New York reaced its objective in 1755. The only successful British expedition that year was undertaken by two thousand New En-glanders who seized two French forts near Nova Scotia. This campaign was memorable less for its military significance that for its tragic aftermath. Following the takeover of the French forts, the governor of Nova Scotia ordered the troops to drive thousands of local French-Canadian civilians, the Acadians, from their homes--often with nothing more than they could carry in their arms--and to burn their"

American teenage girls. "Oh my god!" and "yeah", "sure", "fine", "okay", "umm" and "right" seem to be the only things they can say. Their vocabularies are as developed as, like, whatever
