I have played through the game twice using characters generated from BG1. I have now generated a new character (monk for fun) but Irenicus keeps killing him in the first scene when performing experiments. The first spell gets him everytime!!!! How do I get past this? My other characters must have had enough HP's to withstand these attacks, but now it's friggin driving me crazy. Thanks

Could you elaborate a bit more? You mean to say that your character is killed in the opening movie? Or when the game starts you get the death cutscene?

After I have created a new character and hit accept I am brought to the jail. When Irenicus comes in he casts a spell on the my character for his "experiments" and my character dies. I am brought to the death scene and asked to quit or load. I can't make it to the point where Imoen frees me and the game autosaves by itself.

Do you have the latest patch. If you don't then I suggest that you do because that might be causing your problem.
