And one more before I go, in the epidemic thread, the BBC article I quoted mentioned a death rate of .026% death rate from swine flu in Britain, in the US it's .018%, a significant, if small numerical difference.

(figure retrieved from a briefing held yesterday at the Lebanon VA Medical Center to regional community leaders and was dated 7 Dec 2009)

Healthcare for my eyes

Well, now this is just becoming more political copying/pasting. Hey, you may want to quote your source btw since there's a copywright explicitly put at the end of that article and on the end of each part of it.

It is none other than our very own Ann Coulter!

Wow! You ran out of gas! And then decended into Hate.

Free and/or affordable healthcare should be a Right. YES,,, THE CAPITALIZATION of the 'R' in "Right"....is intentional.

But I agree with you about many other things!

Tort reform part deux; Actually have tort reform. But now you're asking lawyers(legislatures) to reform a source of their income. This may be difficult. But Texas managed it....psst! how DID they manage that? More farmers and businessmen in the legislature...enough to cancel out the lawyer influence?
That's part of it but IIRC the Texas State Constitution says the legislature can only meet for one session every two years then for only so many days.... so when they meet they have to get the stuff done and no happy horse manure, none of this we need to be Bi-partizen when what they really mean is you have to agree with my side. In Texas they have to really be Bi-partizen NO BS talk about it like the rest of the States..... There's a reason that Texas has the lowest unemployement in the country right now.... they don't Play games like the cry babies in the rest of the country does.

I'll tell you what SW you can keep your Health care in Ireland, and we'll keep ours.... walking around and looking at people in walmart is a far sight from knowing squat about health care. My Wife was digniosed with cancer on a fri and by the next friday she was getting treated, and we HAD NO HEALTH INSURANCE... put that in you don't live in the USA pipe and smoke it. You don't know squat.

I know more than you. I have lived in Ireland, England, France, Belgium and the US. Where have you lived?

I am glad your wife got treated without insurance within a day. Is that supposed to be unique to the US?

I also worked and can still work if I choose to, in the medical field. Think, before you speak.

No, it shouldn't. I guess in order to debate that point, we need to define the terms. You're using the word "Right" to mean an entitlement, correct? Something to which you have guaranteed access for little/no payment. The problem is that "healthcare" is not a product created in a vacuum. It's actually the sum total of all services, all work, all sweat-equity, provided by doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, lab technicians, pharmacists, and a thousand other similar occupations. Those people work to provide a service in exchange for compensation. You want to force them to provide their services for free or at a rate with an arbitrary salary cap? If people feel they're not adequately compensated for the work they do, they might put up with it for a while, but eventually they'll find a job in a different field, or they'll move to an area that pays more for their current skills. Or I suppose they could stay where they are and just not put forth the same effort. Why should they? The end result of making healthcare a "Right" is to decrease the quality and availablility.

Or if you agree that they deserve to be compensated, SOMEONE has to pay. Then by free healthcare do you mean that you just want someone else to foot the bill when you see a doctor? Who?

Healthcare for many is an act of of Mercy and Compassion before one of profit, I'd say the R might be capitalized because it is perhaps a Divine Right. I personally prefer the term Human Right.

Yep we are all entitled to and people with more may ought to want to give to those with less because of another another Human value, Charity.

Why? Community- and that's who pays for it, everytime, anyway. We all do.

I guess we could turn away from community, have no charity and forget we are merciful and compassionate. We could suck like that, but I choose not to.
