Damn right Fljotsdale.. I remember well enough that John D Harris posted that US government had spent $ 2 billion on inventing a space pen, which eventually wasn't even necessary..
Nostron: you need not be so negative about other countries, everyone all around the world will do something to help you. Everyone all around the world thinks this act of terrorism is cruel..

Nostron, don't take these as flames because they're not - they're just people disagreeing with you, quite strongly, mate!

Fljotsdale, Link: WELL SAID!
I was pretty mild in my earlier response, and I still feel that way, because I understand the huge, wild turmoil of emotions that most of us feel right now, but I did feel hurt by that comment. We DO care!!

The UK has medical teams standing by to go and help with the grizzly task of identifying the deceased, but they can't go until A)USA opens its airspace B)the back-log of airtraffic stacked up in UK airports is cleared

Is this some sort of way of saying that we should back off Memnoch??

Here is a bit of apropriate nostalgia to this thread.

This editorial was broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair on 5 June 1973 as the United States was withdrawing from Vietnam. It later was printed in the U.S. Congressional Record. Here is a link:

http://www.rcc.ryerson.ca/schools/rt...e/am_text.html

I remember it was released on vinyl also (that's a record ). This has no bearing on the current situation, but it does express an opinion similar to the one Nostron posted.

but they couldnt very well fly over here.

Actually Slacker, ONLY civilian flights are canceled. Living very near Washington DC I can assure you there are plenty of aircraft in the air. Everything from News Helo's to F14 Tomcats to FA18's are in the air at the moment. Rescue helo's are evacing wounded, bringing in supplies and of course moving rescue personnel into place.

have you noticed the size of our country.
we have all the resources you could possibly want for this.
we have all the specialists that are neccissary. we have more people that want to help, than room for them to do so. In our case it is truly "the though that counts" more than the actual physical need for them to do so.

Yes I would say WE do appreciate the thought, but in reality Im only allowed to speak for me so I will say I appreciate the thoughts, well the good ones..not the ones of the people dancing in the streets celebrating. But in the end we rarely get offered the thoughts let alone assistance. Yes we are a HUGE country, some states larger than whole european countries but we can still bleed and cry for our lost. There are few countries being very open with their well wishes, maybe because they are worried about retribution from Usama Bin Laden or others of his ilk.

As I said Thank you for the well wishes, but even on here at IW you can see that we get a lot of hate mail aimed at the USA as well so sometimes its hard to see the good through the bad. Even though the good out weighs the nastiness by a 100 or more times.

Memnoch, if I remember correctly, Australia did send fire fighting experts to help the with forest fires in the USA about a year ago ..

Yep. I can attest to this one. They were up in the pacific northwest fighting fires. And a lot of them train here(I live in Idaho) at the National InterAgency Fire Center(NIFC). Its one of the most renowned firefighting schools in the world(as regards forest/wildfire types of fires). I kind of wish that there were some of those fella here in NY and DC right now. I got to meet some truly awesome guys when I was involved with them(I was working at a local National Guard base, and they trained with the guard. I was a cook and fed them lunch every day).
