Hey everyone!
I am just starting out on a new game, and have three levels, one each in Fighter, Wizard and Cleric. From now on, i will only be levelling in Cleric. my question is; what typr of weapon/s should i be aiming for? at the moment i am using a scimitar i bought. I got it purely becasue it casues criticals on 18-20., althoguh it seems like i am doing critical hits abotu 50% of the time. I am als ocarrying a short bow to get off a shot before melee starts. I chose the Pixie familiar to take care of locks/traps, so i was thinking of using Daelan RedTiger as a henchman. My Character is fairly melee oriented, with str of 14 and con of 12, altohugh dex is only 8 (but am wearing the heaviest armour i can find) also, is it worth taking any weapon specialisation feats? cheers, any help appreciated!

Well, if you're going to want to worry about crits, then scimmys, kukris are the way to go, that or rapiers, they have the highest point value, however, two handed weapons do great critical dmg when you score them...Read it this way, rapiers, scimmys and kukris will score more criticals, but two handed weapons do more dmg on crits, I think scythes go to x4 to the damage rolls.
As for what weapon is best, we could debate that for hours on end. However if you're going to run pure cleric out, I'd say the scimmy is fine, but keep a mace around for undead types, skeletons and their ilk anyway. Very definitely invest in weapon focus, and improved critical. Playing in the OC, and using a henchman, and your familiar you won't get to epic lvls, so the epic weapon focus won't be an issue. I would, however, take the four lvls of fighter, to maximize your weapon potential feats, including specialization. Sometimes that extra point of dmg can make all the difference.

As RTB said, depends on what kind of character you are looking for. Two handed weapons give more damage based on your overall ST (I could be wrong, but the damage is 1.5 your ST modifier instead of just your ST modifier for 2 handed weapons) as well as the higher die total (1d12 sv. 1d6). Add in Bulls Strength or domain bonuses and that makes a difference.
I think I read in another thread that you had a Dex of 8 - that will adversely effect your bow skills (uses Dex, not ST, for to hit bonus). If you have enough feats and like ranged combat, you can always take Zen Archery (uses Wis modifier). Honestly, though, since clerics buff up so well they can tank with the best of characters and don't need much ranged capability. I usually stick with the trusty mace/shield combo out of tradition. |

i am not really gearing him to be a melee powerhouse, so would prefer notot need to take additional feats (exotic weapons) for scythes. I tihnk i will just use whatever i find. I got a longsword +1, but actually might go back to my plain old scimitar, it seemed better.
I was dumb and took the point blank shot feat as i like to get a preemptive shot off - but of course with a dex of 8, he cant hit anything even at point blank range, but still, i like my bow. I think i might move to a crossbow and mace combo - seems very cleric'y thanks for the advice!

Maybe I'm stuck in another rules set, but my last cleric used a mace/shield, and a sling...

I like clubs or maces plus shield for a cleric plus a crossbow for ranged piercing damage. Keep a blade on hand for blunt-resistant foes.
Darkfire and greater magic weapon are a great spell combo when you get up levels. You can choose whichever weapon type you want and still always have decent magic bonuses. I would skip weapon-oriented feats if your character is going to be a second-tier melee type. Focusing on spell-feats will benefit a caster more. I have found extend spell feat, in particular, useful to give buffs and AoE spells longevity. I second taking zen-archery to compliment the point-blank shot and get out of the minus-hole of an 8 dex. I just finished the expansions with a Cleric/Mage. I considered going for 4 levels of fighter for the extra BAB, Feats, and Weapon Specilization, but in the end did just fine focusing on a supportive spellcaster, who could fight real well after a few buffs. I used up every single one of my quick-slots and needed more! Great fun to play [ 06-12-2006, 12:43 PM: Message edited by: Chewbacca ]

I didnt really think of a sling - of course that is the most traditional. It just didnt feel right having a cleric armed with a bow - thats why i switched to crossbow.
i guess i too am stuck in the past.
