An Amphibian Feast

Being the third chapter of Stackman’s adventures

In which the zenmaster dances the night away, and in which the local celebrity of Toad Village is circumvented in a non-violent way.

The next morning the valkyrie’s eyes were wide open when only a faint light orange colour on the skies to the east disclosed the fact that dawn was breaking. She awoke the others and soon they were on their way again. The valkyrie drove the party in a forced march along the banks of the Snake River, through reeds and thickets allowing almost no rest.

About an hour past noon the party had reached a place where the river widened and soon divided into three parts. The leftmost ramification of the river almost seemed to be a small lake. The two other ramifications quickly turned out to confluence on the other side of what appeared to be a small island. They waded to the island and had lunch.

The warlock took out the Tome of Legends from her backpack and went over the entries concerning Toad Village. According to the tome (Legendary Radek’s tip on page two of the Best Tips (the first post on the page)) the ”investigate Toad Village” quest given by Smitty would be completed when they had spoken to Ekbu and gone down into the toads’ subterranean passages. She also recollected from the party’s previous experience that they could not linger long outside Toad Village and investigate the area since the guards hearing them lurking about would sound the alarm. Once the alarm was sounded the toads would have animosity towards the party. Sure they could be killed or stricken with charm spells, but they would not be able to get the quest from Shinwiki. It would be forever forfeit.

While the warlock was reading the barbarian walked up to the valkyrie who sat on the bank dipping her toes into the cool waters. ”You seem eager today”, the wise old barbarian said sitting down beside her. She knew fully well that she could not completely hide her emotions. Least of all to the barbarian who, although he was the sole member of the party without the knowledge of any spell, was very knowing of ancient mythology. He had been her second in command through all their adventures. More than twice her elder and less then half her height the dwarven barbarian had known her for many years, and she looked intently at him for a few minutes without a word, knowing that she would have to relate to the party, and especially to him, what Stackman had said. She told him the story, and he nodded silently. ”I understand why this news affects you so”, he said. ”We have to tell the glorious news to the others, so that they also...”.

While he spoke the two were suddenly attacked by a buzzard. This was an extremely rare occurence since they were not monsters in the Gael Serran sense. The valkyrie took care of the buzzard with one of her three Kerah’s Swords. Knowing the only probable cause of the buzzard’s behaviour, they went back to the others and sure enough found the bard regaling them with a song accompanied on his lyre of madness whose dementia spells had deranged the buzzard. Stackman’s story was related to the rest of the party and soon they broke up and waded into the shallow water of the marshland surrounding Toad Village.

Soon the small huts and platforms on poles were visible to the party. They found the only one with a ladder and walked up to the guard known as Ekbu. ”Do calm down, old chap, and Ukabu and all that”, said the barbarian overbearing to Ekbu’s angry outbursts. Ekbu practically fell to the barbarians feet hearing the word Ukabu, and soon the party had climbed down and was walking through the tunnels of Toad Village.

They had not walked for long before they encountered the local celebrity: the fabled stuck toad who was even more well-known at the Forum than Shinwiki and Ekbu. Knowing from the Tome of Legends that killing a character in one strike does not influence the script (Tip posted by Ryanamur on page three of the Best Tips + Radek’s tip mentioned above) and knowing that both the assassin, the warlock, the zenmaster, and the bard had the sufficient vanish and teleport spells to remove the toad from the passage they chose a third option to honour their tutelary patron. They took a crate and a barrel from the caves and climbed up to Ekbu again. There they threw the crate and the barrel into the water nearly hitting Stackman who had just appeared to help them. The crate and the barrel were stacked half-way between the platform with the ladder and the next. Jumping from the platform to the stack and onto the next platform they climbed down again on the other side of the stuck toad. (As explained in details on page seven of the Best Tips (topic named “Solution to the "stuck toad" bug in Toad Village”))

Soon the party reached Shinwiki’s hut. He told them of the evil that plagued their toadem grounds. The party agreed to rid the evil from the toadem. This was the fifth of seven small quests given by NPCs in the Wilderness of Valeia. The trap door behind them opened automatically, although the party could have opened it themselves by pressing it, and the party went to the toadem grounds.

In the chest behind the toadem pole the party found the usual ankh. Suddenly four oversized creatures vomiting swamp gas appeared. With the whirling dervish spell and a couple of storm spells the zenmaster finished them off. Before they left the place they made sure all party members touched the toadem pole to get the hit points bonus. Not that they needed it though since they had all heavily exploited the toughen bug to gain unfathomably high hit points levels. (As explained by Chi Master on page seven of the Best Tips (reply named “Toughen”) and later on the same page explained thoroughly in details (reply named “The toughen bug)). The croaks of the happy toads resounded through the caves of Toad Village as they walked back.

”You have done it”, Shinwiki exclaimed, his eyes wet with tears of joy, as the party climbed back up. This calls for celebration. A major feast was arranged in honour of the party in general and the zenmaster in particular. They were given Shinwikis magic spear whose power was somewhat overrated. They accepted it, however, so as not to hurt the old shaman. The valkyrie was skilled in the art of pole fighting, but she was already carrying the Lance of the Lady, so the zenmaster got to carry the spear. The party also received a very modest sum of money.

Thus ended the quests given by Mekdawa and Shinwiki. Only five small quests remained. Two of which they had not even received yet. The sunlight waned and night fell but in Toad Village bright torchlights burning throughout the night disclosed that a great feast was being held. The adventurers slept in Shinwiki’s hut satisfied with the events of the day and the lavish feast meal prepared by the toads in their honour. Or that is to say not all slept. The zenmaster danced the night away with the toads, learning all their tribal dances and having a good time being the centre of attention.

But standing outside the merry Toad Village, barely discernible with the vague light of the distant torchlights falling on his face a lone figure stood in the shallow water. It was Stackman. To him the adventures had only really just begun today; and that only with a petty stack in the form of a crate and a barrel. But the stackmaniacs out there had not seen anything yet. Smiling he turned around and waded into the darkness.

NPCs encountered:

Ekbu reacts to following words:

Ukabu, Toad Village, Ekbu, Shaman, Evil, Shinwiki, Toadem, Magik Spear.

With Ukabu being the word that triggers the important action (Securing the friendship of the toads). (As also explained by legendary Wyvern on page two of the Best Tips (reply named ”Here's a quick shortcut to NPC discussions”))

Shinwiki reacts to following words:

Serpent temple, Ishad N’ha, Toad, Ukabu, Toad Village, Shaman, Evil, Cet, Anephas, Kerah, Shinwiki, Toad People, Toad Warrior, Toadem, Magik Spear, Sack of Yellow, Serpent’s Lair.

With Ukabu being the word that triggers the important action (The rid evil quest and the subsequent handing over of the spear and the money).

LOL!!!!

Did you get a picture of them stacking their way over the famous "STUCK TOAD"??!!?? (who is, indeed, more famous than Shinwiki!!)

I would try that but my toads never do get stuck! (don't ask why, I don't know!)
