Re: The Live Elections (Yet another thread on it...)
Well its saying its all confirmed here, Obama has won. 284-146 atm.
And things will be better mate. How do i know? Because they can't be any worse than under Bush. And this looks like a landslide to me, according to reports, over 53% of the popular vote. Has never happened before, or so I'm told.

Re: The Live Elections (Yet another thread on it...)
I just checked the AP interactive map and it showed Obama having 294 electoral votes. I thought that made it "official" until I checked the map more closely. The states that put Obama over the top were CA, OR and WA. But out of those three, the ONLY results they have so far is 6% reporting from OR and 0% CA and WA both. I fully expect Obama to win CA and most likely the other two as well, but it's this kind of premature "projecting" that created problems in the past. I was just about to go to bed thinking Obama had locked up the victory. Not that I doubt that will still be the outcome, but it would be nice if the AP waited until they actually had at least SOME votes from a state before "projecting" that state for either candidate.

Obama 324 - McCain 124
Looks like Bush won't be getting his third term after all. |

Re: The Live Elections (Yet another thread on it...)
If we learned anything from the last two elections, it's that TV/website projections are not trustworthy in close races. At least this year it seems like the different networks aren't calling races just because someone else did already.
But watching CNN during dinner tonight, we saw many states called with 0% or under 5% of the vote reported, and a couple times a state was called for the candidate that was currently behind in the reported votes. Sure exit polls are nice, but they have been wrong before. I'll trust the results when the margin of votes (x is ahead of y by ___ votes) is larger than the number of ballots remaining to be counted. If a state is at 90% reporting and there's a 10% margin--definite win. If it's 30% reported with a 2% margin...any call is just a projection--and the assumptions and data that underly the projection may or may not be valid. That said, it looks like Obama is going to win. I'll wait before trying to guess by how much though. On a related note, who else thinks it's time to stop this winner-take-all electoral college stuff and either go with straight popular vote, or at least move to a proportional electoral college split that states like Maine use? It's kind of silly that here in California, neither candidate bothers to come to campaign for the state. Sure they stop by now and again for fund raisers, but since California is "reliably" Blue, neither party spends any time campaigning or thinking of what issues might be important to the average California. Yet we have the most electors. Ohio got a lot of attention this year. Yet in 2004, there were the same number of people in CA that voted for Bush as there were voters in OH total (5.5 million). I'd much prefer a proportional system where the race was about convincing the most voters that you're the best choice. Our current system boils down to who can win the handful of states that are 'in play' while ignoring the rest of the country because they are seen as definitely going either Red or Blue.

Re: The Live Elections (Yet another thread on it...)
You keep going on about it being too early to tell and its all not offical, jesus. Its done.
If Mcains people can announce to the press he's about to give his concession speech in the next ten mins or so, you can accept the fact Obama has won. Mcain is also meant to have already been on the phone to Obama to congratulate him, also confirmed by the Mcain camp. It's over. Its locked up. 333 - 146. He's got it. Florida has just gone to Obama btw.

Re: The Live Elections (Yet another thread on it...)
Maybe this live press conference I'm watching of Mcain conceding is "premature" as well?
And that this is based on projections. Or, we could just all agree that its over. Not every state has to be counted for it to happen. Quick, someone get Mcain on the phone, tell him its not over til its over, and this is just all too premature...

Re: The Live Elections (Yet another thread on it...)
This is the first thing I've actually liked about Mcain, his concession speech.
Very sincere, very good speech.
