Besides the menu screen, is there anyway I can see my character's front from the main game screen. I see the backside in 3rd person view but I can't see their frontside.

hold tab and move the mouse around him. you can also wait a while until a kind of screensaver comes on but it takes a lot longer. lol i used to soend ages waiting for the screensaver to come on before i found out the tab button.

You can also zoom in and out with the mousewheel while moving the mouse around your character.

and for an extreme close up , stand infront of a wall or something so when you swing the camera around it will be right up next to you.

on xbox just click down the control stick and then you'll have a good view
