They are particularly valuable in age-related depression and post-partum depression. Of course, they should not be used indiscriminately, and, as Ziroc says, physical causes such as anemia should be ruled out first, but I find that it is rare for anything to turn up on most screenings. Depression seems to be under-diagnosed rather than over, IMHO, and frequently vague, chronic illnesses can be rooted in it. Of couse, there is a certain social stigma attached to taking them, as this thread amply proves, and I find that it is difficult to get anyone to take Prozac anymore, just because of the rumors and "Prozac Nation" stories. Pity, it is very useful in the elderly, especially.
Thank you Attalus and lest anyone not know, I'll add that you are in fact a Doctor of medicine and qualified to give such opinions.
Just a small point here, but never ever take someone's advice on a message board as the be all and end all of your health information. Don't assume because your symptoms are the same as someone else's that you have whatever they had. It certainly doesn't hurt to talk about things, but always see your own doctor if you feel ill and get a second opinion on that too, if you are unsure about the diagnosis.
(LOL..ok, my responsible disclaimer mode is off now! )

As for the anti-depressants etc, I always thought that chemical imbalances were dealt with by some drugs and any 'mental' health issues that existed (causes of anxiety etc ) were meant to be dealt with while the person is on medication which makes them feel less stressed, better rested, calmer etc....and able to face the problems with a clear head, so to speak.

Seph, I sure hope you get well soon! It's not easy, but it sounds like you are working on the problem and that's a major accomplishment! GOOD FOR YOU!

Oh, but I am! I'm the one they call Dr. Feelgood! I prescribe booze and laughter for all the afflicted!

Say, did you know that the name of the drug in Viagra is called Mycoxsaflopin? It changes once it enters the bloodstream. Then it's called Mydixadrill!

I think I once saw someone post a thread on another forum(Or maybe it was here at IW.) it was an entire page of alternative names that had been considered for Viagra, they were quite hilarious some of them

Hey bro, just wanted to let you know I hope things get better for you. My brother suffers from pretty bad depression and he was on medecation for awhile, and it helped for awhile, but eventually the effect went away. Hopefully things will work out better for you.

BTW, did you go to a doctor or a psychiatrist?

Gee seph, I wish it could be like it used to be We used to all be happy and cheerful, But we'd have bg2 if it were like this >). But then you wouldn't be so depressed and/or down. Btw, I'm Pain-Wrath, and how's everything else going on with ya? Other than the depression state. Well, I hope you feel a lot better, and godspeed.

*hugs* I hope you get better! I must agree (although I am hardly qualified to give a professional opinion! ) that only taking pills makes little sense, you also need to find out why you're feeling awful and do something about it! However, this is undoubtedly hard to do - when you feel awful, you don't want to think about why you're feeling awful, at least in my experience.
I think I must agree about depressions being common among teens (well, although I haven't seen any signs of it in my classmates... lol), as I know I, Seph and Neb have been feeling extremely down - btw, Neb, I'm not qualified (again) but I think what you went through qualifies as a depression. I really, really hope it's just a phase (I do not EVER want to feel like that again).
As before, *hugs* to Seph and good luck, get better, have fun in band camp, come visit me in Germany sometime!

I second Ziroc's statement. Get a second opinion. I was diagnosed with clinical depression in 1999, and placed on Welbutrin. And I spent a year in a daze. I decided that the "depression" was better than the cure, so I got off the meds. Last year, in Aug, I was diagnosed with Diabetes while going in for a medical exam to qualify for a job. Apparently I had it for YEARS, and I was placed on emergency treatment to get my blood-sugar under control.

I feel SO much better. I'm back to my "normal" personality, optimistic to a fault and overly mischievous.

I'm on a different type of med, but my condition is improving. And now that I know the "real" problem, I can see the end of the tunnel

Don't be afraid of talking to more than one doctor. Get several opinions, and make them work for you.

Feel better soon!

Well everyone, I believe I did get something to suffice as a second opinion. Mom was in there with me, and she's a medical technician so she knows a bit about this stuff too. It's just situational anyways, I'm just hoping to speed up my recovery since it feels like hell to have to remember the feeling of some of the things that happened recently. Well anyways, it's doctor's orders, so I'll be doing them.

and Kaz, I fully intend to visit you in Germany sometime in the not so distant future.

Having to re-feel stuff that made you feel bad to begin with...ugh...I know the feeling.
The good thing is though that you'll get it out and find ways to keep it out.

That's good Cody . Anti-depressants certainly have their place, and I definitely believe in them for assisting motivation to begin and continue counselling. I just don't like the practice of some doctors who just prescribe them without even considering the idea of referring to a mental health professional. A bit like doctors who immediately suggest operations to cure bad backs and joints when chiropractic care could do the trick just as well or better.

Remember that we're all here to help you if you don't get a professional to help you work through stuff, hon *hugs*
