To all my Icewind Dale friends,

I get frustrated with typically not having access to my manual when I am on the forum; and the manual is not always correct. This woeful situation is compounded by the fact that my memory resembles a sieve. So, I decided to do some research into actual in-game data and post it where I can get easy access. These are my notes to myself, to help me answer forum questions; but you, of course, are invited to eavesdrop. To facilitate said eavesdropping, I have included an acronym list at the end of the post.

All data, below, unless explicitly stated otherwise, were collected by examining actual character statistics IN the Icewind Dale game, with HoW and TotLM installed.

I intend to update this information with edits to the original post, rather than adding data as separate posts in this thread.

CAUTION: This post contains spoilers! Please do not go poking around if you wish to not be spoiled.

- Numbers above assume character's STR=DEX=CON=18 & "Max HP/LVL".

- THAC0 & ApR are the effective scores for the melee weapon held. Assumes:
. . - PPs are stacked first in melee weapon, as high as class allows;
. . - Character wields the weapon that gives highest THAC0.
. . - Basic mid-quality Weapon, with NO magical modifiers.

- "Oth" in the ApR section means all classes Other than F, R and P.

- Any data entered for Ranger and Bard above CLVL 13 are IIRC (not yet verified).

- ApR for Ranger is single-handed weapon, no shield. If using shield (verified) or 2-handed weapon (not verified) subtract 1 ApR.

- According to Dundee Slaytern (not personally verified) the max ApR (from personal skills + equipment enchantments, etc.) is 5; but Haste (and other spells) can temporarily boost it as high as 10.

Bonuses To THAC0, Weapon Damage and ApR, vs. Proficiency Points in the weapon.

- Chart data for ApR, only, is verified.

- 5PP is the max that may be stacked in a melee weapon.

- 3 PP is the max that can be stacked in ranged weapon, with the exception that 5 PP may be stacked in Axe, which includes a thrown axe. It is unknown (unverified) whether or not the thrown axe benefits from all 5 PP stacked in Axe.

- Fighters may stack up to 5/3 (melee/ranged).

- DC Fighters may stack up to 5/3 ONLY while Fighter class is active.

- Paladin, Ranger and MC Fighter may stack up to 2/2.

- MC Ranger may stack up to TBD/TBD.

- All other classes may only stack up to 1/1.

"Dt" is Paralyze/Poison/Death (as in: "Save versus Death")
"Wd" is Rod/Staff/Wand
"Pm" is Petrification/Polymorph
"Br" is Breath Weapon
"Sp" is Spell

An empty space in a column means copy down same numbers from row above.

Note that all Paladin saving throws are exactly 2 lower (better) than for a Fighter of the same CLVL; but also note that the Paladin attains those CLVLs more slowly than the Fighter.

A lime number means that number has increased from the previous CLVL (the row above).

A continuation of the above table, for CLVLs up to CLVL=30 is available at The noctalis Mage Page. (These higher CLVLs are not yet game tested by me.)

Specialist numbers are quasi IN-GAME. They are derived from Generalist's numbers using the formula (verified by gaming experience) of: Add one spell at each new SLVL, as soon as SLVL is gained.

A lime number or song means that number has increased from the previous CLVL (the row above), or that the song is acquired at that CLVL.

Here is a description of the Bard's songs:

* The Ballad of Three Heroes : Bards start the game with the ability to play this ballad. When the Ballad of Three Heroes is played, all the bards allies gain +1 to hit, +1 damage, and +1 saving throws. It lasts as long as they continue playing. If they attempt to do something else (like move, attack, etc.) they stop playing.

* The Tale of Curran Strongheart: Bards gain this song at 3rd level. When the Tale of Curran Strongheart is being played, any fear effect on the bards' allies are removed and they gain an immunity to fear effects for as long as the song lasts.

* Tymora's Melody: Bards gain this song at 5th level. When played, Tymora's Melody gives the bards' allies +1 luck, +3 saving throws, and +10% to their lore skill and thief skills.

* The Song of Kaudies: Bards gain this song at 7th level. When the Song of Kaudies is played, the bards' allies gain a 50% chance to shrug off the effects of spells such as Silence, Shout, Great Shout, Command, or any other sound-based attacks.

* The Siren's Yearning: Bards gain the Siren's Yearning at 9th level. When played, the bards’ enemies must save vs. spell or be enthralled, unable to take action unless 1 turn passes or they take damage.

* War Chant of Sith: The War Chant of Sith becomes available to bards when they reach 11th level. When played, the bards' allies gain -2 bonus to AC, +10% resistance to slashing, piercing, crushing, and missile attacks, and they regenerate 2 hit points every round.

PAGE 11 . Dual Classing (DC)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Only Humans may DC.

- The Bard may not DC.

- The Paladin may not DC.

- The following is the list of all possible DC combinations, shamelessly lifted (with slight massaging, but without verification) from ZFR's post, below. If a combination is not mentioned here it means it's not allowed. The prequisites are given in paranthesis:

Fighter --> Thief (STR 15, DEX 17)
Fighter --> Mage (STR 15, INT 17)
Fighter --> Cleric (STR 15, WIS 17)
Fighter --> Druid (STR 15, WIS 17, CHA 17, True Neutral alignement)
Thief --> Fighter (DEX 15, STR 17)
Thief --> Mage (DEX 15, INT 17)
Thief --> Cleric (DEX 15, WIS 17)
Mage --> Fighter (INT 15, STR 17)
Mage --> Thief (INT 15, DEX 17)
Mage --> Cleric (INT 15, WIS 17)
Cleric --> Fighter (WIS 15, STR 17)
Cleric --> Thief (WIS 15, DEX 17)
Cleric --> Mage (WIS 15, INT 17)
Cleric --> Ranger (WIS 15, STR 17, DEX 17, Lawful Good, Neutral Good or Chaotic Good alignement)
Druid --> Fighter (WIS 15, CHA 15, STR 17)
Ranger --> Cleric (STR 15, DEX 15, WIS 17)

To dual-class to ANY mage you need to have INT 17, and have 15 in the primary ability score of the class out of which the character is DCing. In addition, to DC to specialist mage you need:

Abjurer: WIS 15
Conjurer: CON 15
Diviner: WIS 16
Enchanter: CHA 16
Illusionist: DEX 16
Invoker: CON 16
Necromancer: WIS 16
Transmuter: DEX 15

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
PAGE 12 . Multi-Classing (MC)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Only a Gnome may MC a Specialist Mage, and he may only MC the Illusionist (not verified).

- Only NON-humans may MC.

Complete monster, weapon and spell data can be found atThe Locus Inn (as well as other neat IWD stuff). It is a UK site; so possibly not all data is exactly the same as for North American version. Thanks to Roboghost for digging this link up; and to Aerich for promoting it.

An excellent IWD walkthrough, weapon and spell data, and other goodies for several games can be found atMike's RPG Center.

Baldurs Gate data can be found at planetbaldursgate. Beware, though this data is useful (because BG1 and IWD are both 2nd Ed. D&D) some of it (e.g. the ApR vs weapon PP data) does not match in-game IWD experience.

Here is the list of the ability scores needed to be able to dual class to particular specialist mage (I'm adding this here since it's not mentioned in the manual and can be useful)

Abjurer: WIS 15
Conjurer: CON 15
Diviner: WIS 16
Enchanter: CHA 16
Illusionist: DEX 16
Invoker: CON 16
Necromancer: WIS 16
Transmuter: DEX 15

Remember that to dual to any specialist mage (or normal mage) you also need to be human, have INT 17 and 15 in the primary ability score of your class.

If you're dualing to specialist mage, I could swear that you need to have at least 17 in the other stat as well, not just Int. Kind of like how a D/C druid needs 17 Wis and 17 Cha.

Yep, the only 17 needed is INT. There's files like DUALCLAS.2DA which determine these in the game, and it only lists for the main class, not specialisms.

Hi NobleNick,
With regard to warrior THAC0, I take it you are assuming no racial combat bonuses, but what about exceptional STR?

Also, I noticed you're using HOW data. In IWD without HOW, the classes continue to receive CON bonuses to HP. For example an warrior with CON=18 gets 7 HP per level after 9th level, and the Ranger/Paladin spell table is also different. Without HOW, these classes get a lot more spells before 14th level.

Otto,

Yes, I have listed NO racial THAC0 bonuses. I believe the Ranger is the only character to get them, and he only for one race. Actually, I have NO in-game data at all for the Ranger (yet).

I know this will sound snobbish, though I don't intend it that way; but IWD with HoW is so superior to vanilla IWD in so many ways, that I have no interest at all in the latter, except as it may help me to help others who have yet to acquire the expansion. That is a neat fact though: the CON bonus being good for IWD-only. So now I've found -ONE- reason for not installing HoW.

Exceptional (18/xx) STR. Good question. I haven't added it because: A.) I don't remember the effects; and B.) I assumed that the effects were not that big a deal. Maybe I am wrong about the latter, and I wouldn't mind getting a lesson on the former.

If you include spell table, spells, and abilities, I think EVERY class except the Fighter changed. The Bard and Druid changed (improved) significantly.

Yes, I am using only HoW data, except where I seem to always be confronted with situations where the differences matter for commonly asked questions (like Specialist Mage opposition schools).

That's a very nice list. It should be made a sticky.
