What type of creature will this ability be used a lot on? I'd prefer it being a slightly dangerous enemy also, so that the ability isn't wasted.

Pick anything. Really. It's not like IWD/HoW, where certain types of creatures (undead) showed up at every stage of the game - most types of enemies in IWD2 are only present in one or two chapters. The IWD2 favoured enemy system is slanted toward high level rangers who can pick an additional enemy every chapter or two, so one favoured enemy won't do you much good, even if you pick the "best" one.

My suggestion? Figure out the stage of the game that gives you the most trouble and pick a favoured enemy that corresponds to enemies found there.

Good advice!

If Half-Goblins count as Goblins, I may very well be picking them. They show up quite often throughout the game, and pack a pretty strong punch.

You can't pick Humans, can you?

It's too bad you can't pick humans.
