What is this? Could this be slowing my computer down?

It's where Windows keeps all the settings for all the programs and the operating system... basicly it's the heart of Windows. it can get bloated, when you install and uninstall programs they sometimes leave their settings in the registry, and it can slow thing down.

If you have Norton Utilities you can run Windows Doctor and it finds unused entries, making it much more efficient.

If you got to the strat menu and run and type "Regedit" you can take a look at the Registry, just don't make any changes...

Well the registry can slow things down but most often it is your hard drive that is the culprit. As Jorath said, Norton Utilities can fix some errors in the registry. It also has (had?) a function to optimize the registry. However, Norton is far from the best registry software out there. I'd recommend RegCleaner 4.3, NOT any later versions. It cleans the registry automatically and backs up every key/value it removes if somehitng should go wrong.
