The defensive barrier is even better if one or more of your tanks is virtually unhittable.
I wasn't too sold on the idea of using a F/Ill multiclass as my lead tank through HoF until I tried it. However, it gets up to -13 AC without buffs (18 Dex, Robe of Enfusing, Bracers AC 6, Helm of Trusted Defender, Red Knight's Shield, Blur Belt, Ring of Protection +2, and Black Wolf Talisman), -15 AC unbuffed if you use the Defender Axe. Tell me this character isn't better than a pure fighter with the same items - of course, a pure fighter couldn't use all of these. Even the Bathed-In-Blood armor (-1 AC) isn't much better than the Robe of Enfusing + Ring of Protection + Bracers. The gnome F/Ill can cast Mirror Image (lasts 3 rounds/lvl, meaning about 30 rounds by the end of the Vale) and Stoneskin (certain number of hits), the two most important self-buffs of a mage. Don't forget, Mirror Image essentially gives you immunity to most AoE damage until the last image is gone. Further, a F/Ill or F/M can cast Shield (or use the Wand of Armory to cast it), thus giving itself immunity to Magic Missiles cast by imbued wights, stone nuisances, and every mage you meet. The only real advantages to pure fighters over paladins and warrior multiclasses is that they level up slightly faster and can get grandmastery. Warriors with spellcasting ability have the advantage of both defensive and offensive spells, including AoE (which fighters cannot do without items) and possibly healing. Uh huh.
F/I = best defender (with mirrors) I'd rather go for dc fighter than pure fighter. |

Thanks a lot guys. Got through 1st hard area in cave by using skeletons. I employed single cleric. Then drop him afterwards.
I use dalekeeper a lot to fix up weapon for paladin and F/I. I think the easist is to put Paladin with Bows, Swords, then Mace then Axe. Then put F/I with Sword, Flail, Axe and Bow. This is just perfect. I in Dragons Eye now. Going to kill the big snake in final leve. |
