It is suppose to help in dealing with people. Selling and buying you get better prices, and has something to do with leadership as well. Apparently your first party member should have a decent charisma. Personally the sword coast has gold in abundance so charisma is not that important.

ahh but charisma is important. Besides determining how much people will charge you for their goods, it also has an effect on the reactions you have with other characters in the game. Many times (well, a few times at least...) charisma will determine wether you get the standard stock responses from people, or whether or not they'll go the extra mile for you. For instance
SPOILER!!!! - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - -- -- - - - - - - there, that should be far enough. Anyways, in the encounter that you have with the man north of the gnoll stronghold is dependant upon your charisma. If you're "nice" enough, then he'll give you the boots of cold resistance. The same sort of things happens with Hull, and the Captain of the Gurad, back in candlekeep. I'm sure there are several more, but i can't think of any at the moment.

SixOf Spades link sums it up best.
It is important but only for one member, usually the guy who initiates the speech. |

SPOILER-
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The guy (girl?) upstairs in the FAI with the spider quest gave me like a dozen antidote potions when I had an 18 CH.

Charisma is your friend, for the reasons and links listed above. Imagine the shop keepers reaction to seeing a person uglier than a troll enter his store. Prices go up, the economy becomes inflated, interest rates sore, kobolds recently integrated into our society panic and mate with Xvarts. All because of some trollish looking lout.

Yea don't downgrade charisma. It is just as important as the other figures (maybe not but still...). If you are a paladin then charisma is important.

Does charisma attract the attention of the soldiers who chase you as well or is that only related to your rep points.

Duh after you reread that it is pretty self explanitory really. I mean after all, there seem to be very few NPC guards running around screaming "ARREST THAT BUTT UGLY MAN"
