This lot of questions was asked at a local mall, and the results were sickening. I took the test, before seeing the answers and got them all right. What are kids learning in our school system is what I want to know!!!!

P.S. Nobody got # 5 correct....

Test your knowledge, and I'll post the results later

* * *
The following questions were posed to 17 shoppers at the Mall

1. Q. Why do we celebrate the Fourth of July?

Independance Day

2. Q. From which country did America gain independence?

Britain

3. Q. Which river did George Washington and his troops cross in a surprise attack during the Revolutionary War?

Dunno

4. Q. Where was the Declaration of Independence signed?

Dunno

5. Q. What are the three 'unalienable rights' afforded to us by the Declaration of Independence?

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

6. Q. How many stripes are on the American flag?

um. 7 red and 6 white. I just counted on a picture of the US flag!

7. Q. Who wrote the words to the "Star Spangled Banner?"

Dunno

8. Q. What country gave us the Statue of Liberty?

France

9. Q. Who was the first president of the United States?

Thomas Jefferson

10. Q. Which came first: the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence?

Declaration of Independence?

My excuse for not knowing 'em all is that I'm British!

Here's a good question for you :

What were the three original Enlightenment period principles established that our principles are based upon? Bonus points if you can name the man who came up with them.

*Man should be free

*Man should be self-governing

*Democracy is the finest form of self-government

*Free expression is crucial to the practice of democracy

Guessing on who came up with them? John Locke??

You are hitting more along his personal principles. I meant his specific points that are copied basically verbatim except for the last one. A fantastic answer though. I'll give it too ya for that.

And yes, it was Mr. JL. Good one.

JL's original thesis: "Life, liberty, and property."

This is sad (I managed to get 7/10 without thinking about it). Just be thankful that it's not just American kids - although I'm suprised, I thought that you were pretty big in teaching your own history in schools (and hopefully not just "hollywood history").

Another 4th related question:

Which President died on the 4th of July with his last words being "Thomas Jefferson Lives"?

What is ironic about his statement?
