IWD is quicker to play. BG2 is bigger and more involved. I'd do IWD first personally.

You could of course do BG1 and TotSC (BG1 expansion, also DSotSC unofficial add on) and then import your character into BG2. That is then a massive game and when you're done with them you can follow up with Throne of Bhaal (BG2 expansion).

EDIT: P.S. IWD has a (smallish) add on called Heart of Winter and there's a supplementary add on to that too I believe. Sizewise it still doesn't compare to BG1 or 2.

I´d go for IWD first. Mainly because it´s fairly easy and straightforward and you can create whatever kind of party you like.

i think it depends on what style of play you enjoy, i feel that bg1 and 2, with add ons are great and would be my first choice because of the epic proportions and almost infinite options. IWD is good, but i felt it was more hack and slash/tactical than plot, which is good, but it geta little repetetive....

renewed shall be the blade that was broken,
the crownless shall again be king.

Having played IWD I'd have to agree Strider 123. My suggestions are for if you haven't played a game of this type before. There's nothing worse than starting an epic like Baldurs Gate and then having to restart because of inexperience. IWD is easier as it's not as intensive in many ways.

BG2 for its great story, characters you encounter and romances. Plus you might ascend to godhood.

I think the Baldurs gate games are an awful lot better but icewind dale is very good too, try Planescape Torment though best game they ever made.

I got bored of PST after a while, but I have to admit that the sound effects in PST are so cool. (also being undead is cool too!)

But personally - BG2. Yes definately BG2.

Play them all. They're all great, but planescape is the best.
