I have had to restart the whole game again due a technical defect on my machine. I am now on Chapter 3 and have decided to take with me on my travels Xan whom I made chums with after the fiasco in the mines. However try as I might the decietful little mage simply refuses to write particular magic to his spell book. The spells in question are Magic Missiles (my girlfriend likes it cause of the 'pretty colour!) and Chromatic Orb. Is it because he is of a particular school?

Yup - that's it. The game's manual has a complete list of the opposing schools of magic.
