Please re-define gremlins, you mean like spywarez and such sh*t? I got WinPatrol installed and a actieve Virusscanner.
I do mean spyware and viruses. I'm not familiar with WinPatrol, so I can't vouch for it; I rely on Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware to keep the gomers out of there. And the most important thing with a virus scanner is to make sure it's up to date -- have you downloaded today's update yet? Seriously, with Sobig running around the virus definitions have been getting updated quite frequently.

Definitely sounds memory or resource related.
If thats the case, how will this be fixed?
You might post a listing of the things running in the task manager. Either applications or processes -- either one might hold keys. I can't suggest things to avoid because there are too many possible variations. There are known needed things (explorer, systray), known good things (anti-virus, popup killers), and known bad things (spyware, viruses). There may also be some that you just want to have around, like a friend who insists on having his eBay toolbar. Spyware, but he likes what it offers... his choice. I choose otherwise.

And another thought just popped up... anti-virus settings. Check your settings to see if there's something which might force AV scanning on access, like what you're doing with the files. That would also show up in the task manager window when a slowdown is happening.
