Alternately, if you've got a web site somewhere that will let you store enough data, just put the file on your web site and give her the URL. She can download from there, and you can do the same thing.
We already have this for the smaller files...I was thinking more of the large ones where she can download them while I'm asleep etc.

Do you have web space at the University? You could put it there...

While FTP is good you'l need webspace for this. IRC is a good idea for this actually, it allows resume, therefore you don't have to worry about getting DC. I wouldn't use MSN as suggested above, as it doesn't have resume so it's pretty risky and not a good idea for regular big file transfers. In IRC simpy setup your own channel on your own server, and dcc send each other the files, should work a treat.

You can also use www.yousendit.com to send files up to 1 GB. It's free...

OK, I updated my MSN Messenger to 7.5 (I still had 4.7 from 3 years ago!! - shows how much I use it eh ) and did a transfer of a 120MB file which took forever. It's ok I suppose, as long as both of us are online together - but I'd like a more elegant solution where I can post something up somewhere and she can download it at her convenience, without us having to coordinate things. Is FTP really not an option for me?

*Points above*. How about IRC then? Well a mate of mine has about 300gbs of stuff sharing on FTP which I can access, so I'l ask him where he gets his space from. But seriously, check out IRC, it's far better for file transfers than MSN.

You could install an FTP server on either your own or your sis' computer. Put it on the one with the static IP if you have one, to keep life simple.

Then, the other one of you can connect to the server with a decent FTP client and upload and download as you would any other FTP server. The one with the server, of course, can just access the directory being served directly, to add files or to access them.

Resurrecting this thread as the time has now come to send stuff.

OK, the file I want to send is a Super 14 rugby file that I paid for and downloaded via MediaZone. I want to share this file with her as London don't show all the Waratahs matches. The file is a .wmp file and it's about 750MB.

So far I have 3 choices:

1. FTP - though I'm still confused about how to use it, what software, etc.

2. IRC - never used this. How does this work?

3. Gmail - won't work as my file size is too big

4. MSN - too slow for me I think

5. Webspace - anyone know of a cheap place to buy webspace? Around 1GB?

Have you not given this link by VulcanRider a shot? I've received hundreds of MB all at once from this site's sharing capability before. I do not see why it would not work for you.
