Imagine if everyone just enjoyed themselves, where would the starving people be? Who would fight for the poor? There are unenjoyable things that need to be addressed...do you see what I am (poorly) trying to state. That enjoyment is obviously ok, but enjoyment to the point of ignoring the rest of the world is not.
That's the way I understood it too. IMHO, the writer meant that we are not here to enjoy ourselves, we are here to... make a difference, help others, etc. As Moridin said.
Of course, you'd have to ask the writer himself what he meant by that.

You must read fast Diogenes!

I thought I read pretty fast, but there is no way I would complete that in 10 minutes

Thanks for the link from me also, only read first couple of paragraphs, but will read in entirety when I am at home!

Hmmm/...a lot of uplifting quotes. Good topic Cheetah lady.

Guess I'm too cynical though, cuz this is my absolute favorite quote...

When you're having a bad day and it seems like people are trying your patience, remember; it takes 42 muscles to frown, and only 4 to pull the trigger of a decent sniper rifle.

Here are a few others that I have collected over the years.

Oh No! Not ANOTHER learning experience!

"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so." - Douglas Adams

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

"What goes up must come down. Just ask any system administrator."

Yep...defenitely too cynical.

Hmmm . . . lol. I suppose I should amend that to say that one could read it in 10 minutes, if already thoroughly familiar with it from 20 prior readings, like me . For a first reading, you are quite right. It deserves to be read slowly, with frequent pauses to think about and digest what is being said.

This is actually an adaptation of the General Patton quote
"A pint of sweat, saves a gallon of blood"

Both are great quotes though
