Nike has filed a lawsuit with Sega over the recently unveiled advertising campaign for NBA 2K2.

The suit complains that Sega`s new advert is almost identical to a famous 1980`s advert featuring Michael Jordan. The Sega advert does seem quite similar, although the counter argument is likely to be that there`s sufficient small differences. There is no specific value to the suit, but it does say "The amount in controversy exceeds $75,000".

More here

I'd imagine the legal companies are licking their lips in anticipation.

Where is this suit being filed? If it's outside the US maybe, just maybe, some one will use intelligence.

A few questions

1) Who (apart from bored Nike advertising people) is going to see a Sega advert and remember an ad from 1980 that was similar?
2) How is Nike gonna lose income? (2002 computer game vs 1980 basketball boots - not really things you can easily get confused over buying)

Just wondering?

Nope, not just for the fun of sueing, but for the chance of getting a ton of cash over some little meaningless thing that they're oft times the cause of themselves.

Im a fan of sega, being a Phantasy Star Online RPG player, I know that sega is in desperation already as it is. They're making games for ALL systems now and not just their own,hey've givent he rights of Sonic to Nintendo, and the rights of Virtua Fighter to Sony, and the rights of Shenmue and Jet Set Radio to MIcrosoft, the list just goes on and on...

They've even halted all Dreamcast production aside form the new "collectors eddition Dreamcast" which will probably only earn ONE single advertisement...

@_@ ;

Nike shouldn't beat a poor dead horse...

Ever wonder why car insurance is so high? I had an auto accident in my early twenties. I was over the center line on a road without a painted center line by 12-16 inches. I had dropped a lit cigarette in my lap. The oncoming vehicle was speeding. We struck a glancing head-on collision. As if it wasn't enough evidence of their speed, I only went a few feet off the road while they flew 50 feet off the road into a large front yard. Unfortunately, they could prove I was too far over, but not what the other persons speed was, according to the book. I was found at fault. Six years and seven months later, I get a notice that I'm being sued for it! The insurance company settled for almost $50,000! I'd like to think that they actually needed the money to pay off medical bills, but everyone walked away from the accident. I don't think any major injuries occurred. Injury lawyers generally walk away with 40-50% of the money in cases like these. Most judges rose to the office from the brotherhood of lawyers. Injury and damages lawsuits are the "meat and taters" on the plates of the lawyers profession. If you have deep pockets, you can rest assured that you'll be sued eventually.
