computer time -> motherboard battery empty

Would my backup battery be empty when my time is always back 15-20 minutes if I keep my computer on for a long time without using it? The bios time changes.

I'm not sure of what you're asking. Are you talking about the internal battery (on the mother board) or an external backup battery for use during power failures. The internal battery is for maintaning the cmos while the power is off. An external battery is usually good for about 1/2 hour. It's purpose is to allow you to shut down without losing anything.

I mean the internal one. Cause I don't know what's causing this but my time in the bios keeps getting set back to 15-20 minutes.

Could be a sign of bad power status of the battery. I wouldn't say empty, because then the CMOS settings would reset to factory/last flash, but it might be a failty battery. Should get a new one, those things are cheap at least(maybe 10$).

Lol it looks like it's setting back exactly 5 minutes I turn off my PC. 10$? I thought it was a normal battery like you put in a watch or are these that expensive as well. Well I wait a bit till I actually have time to look at it cause it looks like I'm better off using my computer instead of worrying about the clock being behind for some time.

Yup, looks like your mobo internal battery is running out of juice. If I am not wrong, the price of one of those Lithium cell is only about US $5.00 or less.

If I replace it everything gets reset isn't it? Or not if I replace it while my PC is on?

It's not a big deal, it's only the BIOS settings that get reset AFAIK - you can set those back to what you had in a matter of minutes. On my old 486 ages ago, the battery was dead for months cos I couldn't be bothered to go and find a replacement in the shops so I set the BIOS up and detected the hard disk every time I switched the comp on

got pretty quick at it, hehe

You have 60 seconds(some have more, some have less, mine has 150s) to replace it. You might have a few good options if your BIOS battery os out-juiced. I held my old PC's battery for months because of those specials. The system gets more confused(no system recovery) and file searching loses it's date functionality, but if you wanna try it, go ahead(don't).

I don't need to change that many options but a dead battery would kill all them (no cd and disk at boot only from hd password protected) so I'm going to get a new one then soon [img]smile.gif[/img]
