Every now and then one comes across material accusing Dungeons and Dragons (if not fantasy RPGs in general) as Satanic by nature, causing people to become interested in dangerous occult practices or the like. I consider it silly, but what do you think? Just curious.

I'd say my opinion on the subject, but just the idea that AD&D is satanic and leads children to occult practices has me catatonic with laughter

Not in my book. I suppose you could say demons etc. are evil, or you could do evil things in the game. But satanic? Of course not, they should spend their time chasing the really satanists who rob graves etc.

I don't think anyone here would take them seriously.

I lump it in the same category as those who think Harry Potter is satanic too...

K.T.,

I've had this discussion many time with different members of my current church. On the very first night that I went, one of the deacon's wives got up and gave an "informative review" of the Satanic influence of AD&D.

I went up to her after the service and asked what she really knew about the game she had just publicly denounced". The answer was "Not much."

Is the game Satanic? No, it is simply a game. What people get out of it is entirely up to the individual.

However, DnD is not ENTIRELY innocent either. It does contain some of the most basic occultic terminology (thaumaturgic circle, pentagram, etc."- and that could lead to a growing curiosity of - and interest in - the occult as a young child grows older.

Of course, it's also possible for someone to develop an interest in the occult without EVER picking up a DnD manual.

Again, it is the individual - NOT the game - that determines the direction thier life will take.

Thought you might respond, Cerek. Largely agree with you, too.

BTW, Cerek, I'm 39 -- same as you!
