A little OT, but my better half discovered something this weekend that I like even less than salads... a large sized hornet's nest outside our back door. For those non-English speakers, a hornet is like a bee, but bigger and nastier...

The nest is about six inches in diameter (that's around 20 cm), and very, very active.

I've called an exterminator who's coming out tomorrow to take care of the problem (and who had the audacity to imply that it's a small nest! It's as big as my kids' heads!). I'm going to see if I can keep the nest as a souvenir -- kind of strange, I know, and probably a real guy thing, but on one level, it's really kind of cool...

I'll be the one watching the proceedings from the safety of my house as some brave soul dressed up like an astronaut takes care of my problem. More later as the situation proceeds... if the news warrants it.

LOL I tried burning haze, Arsales, but in order to do that, I had to take my gloves off... leaving a nice open target for the hornets. Since I do computer work, having the tips of my fingers all puffy and sensitive didn't sound like a good idea. While I thought of using flamedrop, the tree they're in is right next to the house, and I don't know any firefighter spells....

To close the chapter, a guy came out, dressed like a hazmat worker, and blasted the nest with three different insecticides. Then he knocked it down, tied it up in a plastic bag, and went on his merry way. Sadly, I couldn't keep the nest, but life goes on.

Of course, before that this morning my daughter fell off the monkey bars at school and broke her arm in two places. When life rolls, it roars. She's doing fine, but swimming is going to be a trick for the next couple of weeks
