Can someone enlighten me about the mechanics of pulling off a successful backstab please? Is it just a matter of striking from behind, or is there some special key, sequence, weapon, ability, etc., that you must do?

Thanks.

Basically for a backstab to work you need to be behind the target and must be hidden in the shadows. Also invisbility works nice for this. I think there are restrictions on what weapons you can backstab with if you are dual classed or multi classed? (like only weapons a thief could use?)

This is correct. You can only backstab with a MELEE weapon usable by a true class thief; specifically, longsword, shortsword, scimitar, ninja-to, wazikashi, katana, dagger, club, or quarterstaff (I hope I've listed them all ). In addition, there are a few creatures that cannot be backstabbed.

Celestial Fury is probably the best backstab weapon, I've hit for over 150 points of damage in a single blow. Hiding in shadows is not enough for a succesful backstab on all occasions as the intended victim may "hear" the attempt and the backstab will revert to a standard attack. It's important to assign points to "move silently" as well as "hide in shadows" to increase your success rate.
