Last I heard Raimi said he planned 6 movies.

And I doubt they would kill off anyone due to contracts. They are trying to be loyal to the comic. If someone wouldn't come back ("Yeah, sorry, but I don't want that bundle of cash"), they could be recast.

The key to whether or not the series will fall apart IMO depends more on whether or not they can keep the same director/writers, not necessarily the fact that no other series has held up past #3, that's one reason I"m not that interested in X3, Singer didn't sign on for the 3rd installment, and I've heard it was partly because of a poor script, and partly because he was offered the new Superman movie.

<font color = lightgreen>I would tend to disbelieve that the script for X3 is poor quality. With all the money riding on it, Stan Lee and Avi Arad wouldn't go for that. Singer must have been offered a wad of cash and/or complete creative freedom to jump ship to Superman.
